Health Benefits of Coconut Oil
What Is Coconut Oil?
Coconut oil is an edible oil that has been extracted from the flesh of mature fruits of the coconut palm or the Cocos nucifera.
Coconut oil has been used for thousands of years by cultures living in the tropics. People of these cultures traditionally demonstrated incredible levels of good health and fitness, particularly if they followed their traditional diet that was normally rich in tropical fruits and coconut oil. Their health often deteriorated when they started adding unhealthy Western foods to their diet.
Understanding Fats
There is a widely spread misconception about fat. The idea that fat, especially the saturated fat, was bad for you originated in the 1960s-70s. There was a faulty research that pointed out that fat was the main culprit in the heart disease. This idea gave birth to low-fat diet and a marketing craze of low-fat, no-fat "food" products. In 1977 low-fat diet was recommended to the American society by the Dietary Guidelines for Americans Committee. This recommendation caused more harm than good. There was not only no decrease in heart disease, Americans were getting sicker and fatter than ever before. Only recently, after evaluation of the empirical data "powers-to-be" came to realization that we need fat in our diet and that saturated fat is not necessarily evil.
We need fats in our diet! Fats helps us absorb the fat soluble vitamins A, D, E and K. Fats are necessary for the proper neurological function and other processes within the body. They provide insulation to our body and the internal organs and are stored as a valuable energy reserve. So, instead of vilifying fat, we should eat the right fats.
Fats are composed of carbon, hydrogen and oxygen. (Some phospholipids may also contain nitrogen and phosphorus atoms.) The number of hydrogen molecules is what determines saturation of fats. When each carbon atom has its maximum number of hydrogen atoms attached to it, we call that fat a saturated fat. In other words, a saturated fat is a fat that is filled to its capacity with hydrogen atoms. Saturated fats are usually of animal origin - like lard and butter. They are solid and rather unstable at room temperature.
Plant-derived fats are unsaturated fats. They are either monounsaturated - like the oleic fatty acid in olive oil; or polyunsaturated - like linoleic fatty acid found in corn, soybean, peanut, cottonseed or safflower oil.

- Most saturated fatty acids in coconut oil are medium chain triglycerides: lauric acid, capric acid, myristic acid and palmitic acid.

Health Benefits of Coconut Oil
The most recent research confirms what was known for ages: Coconut oil is good for you! The many health benefits include:
- Mental health and cognition - Research shows that medium chain triglycerides (MCTs) found in coconut oil can significantly improve cognitive function in humans and animals. Studies demonstrated that both, people and aging dogs consuming MCTs performed better on cognitive tests that those who did not. Moreover, MCTs produce ketones which are used by the body as an insulin-independent energy source. The most recent research suggests that Alzheimer's patients may not be unable to properly utilize insulin in their brains. The brain needs insulin in order to use glucose, but when brain cells lack glucose, they die. This may lead to brain damage and neurological diseases such as Alzheimer's. Since ketones deliver energy necessary to support healthy function and structure of brain cells they may play important role in treatment and prevention of Alzheimer's disease. More research needs to be conducted, but there is hope for those who suffer from this incurable disease.
- Digestion - Coconut oil may help improve digestion and digestive disorders. The medium chain fatty acids (MCFAs) in coconut oil are easier to digest that the long chain fatty acids in other oils. This means that the digestion of coconut oil puts less strain on liver and pancreas since the digestion of MCFAs does not require bile or pancreatic enzymes. Coconut oil can help alleviate symptoms of Crohn's disease, pancreatitis, ulcerative colitis and stomach ulcers. It speeds digestion and can prevent constipation. Coconut oil also has the unique ability to kill or expel parasites of the digestive tract including worms such as tapeworms and protozoa such as girardia. Health Benefits of Blueberries
Blueberries are one of the healthiest foods available to us all year round. More and more researchers publish study results that are quite amazing. Short of a nutritional miracle this tiny dark berries can help reverse effects of premature aging and improve debilitating conditions.
Blueberry is a native North American perennial flowering plant from the genus Vaccinium that also includes cranberries, lingonberries and bilberries. The plant produces indigo-colored berries and is mostly cultivated in North America and Europe, but also grows successfully in other parts of the world.
Blueberries are very high in vitamin K, vitamin C, manganese, copper and dietary fiber. They contain anthocyanins, flavonols, and other phytonutrients that include resveratrol and pterostilbene. Studies demonstrated that all these phytonutirents act as antioxidants that protect the whole body from oxidative stress. These nutrients protect the DNA and act as anti-inflammatory agents that help reduce inflammation in the body.
Cognitive Health
The latest research suggests that compounds in blueberries may help slow down age-related damage to the brain cells, reverse age-related memory loss and improve overall cognitive health. Test subjects who consumed blueberries had improved memory, learning skills, cognition, reasoning, verbal comprehension and numerical skills.
Blueberries may help slow down cognitive decline in aging adults and prevent against Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease. Researchers discovered that compounds in blueberries significantly increase production of the neurotransmitter dopamine. Dopamine deficiency is associated with bad mood, depression and Parkinson's disease. Increased consumption of blueberries may help ward off the onset of Parkinson's disease, improve mood and alleviate depression in dopamine deficient individuals.
Cardiovascular Health
Blueberries protect blood vessels from oxidative stress and help balance cholesterol. People who ate 1-2 cups of blueberries daily for a period of 1-3 months had increased levels of HDL (the good cholesterol) and reduced levels of LDL or the blood vessels clogging and damaging bad cholesterol. Blueberry extract was shown to lower blood pressure. People who eat blueberries on regular basis have much lower chance of developing hypertension. Research shows that blueberries help lower blood pressure in two ways: On the one hand they help blood vessels to relax reducing the resistance to blood flow; on the other, blueberries (the extract, to be precise) inhibits the protein that the body uses to keep blood pressure elevated.
Blueberries are classified as low-GI fruits. GI or the Glycemic Index is a method of measuring the impact of food on our blood glucose levels. Foods with lower GI release glucose more slowly and steadily and do not cause glucose spikes. This is important for people who struggle with metabolic syndrome, insulin resistance, type 2 diabetes and obesity. In addition, fiber in blueberries helps to further balance blood sugar and improve health of those patients who were diagnosed with blood sugar problems.
Cancer
Various studies demonstrated that blueberry extract may prevent uncontrolled cell reproduction that could lead to formation of tumors. The extract also prevented formation of pre-cancerous lesions. Cancers such as that of the colon or the cervix begin as pre-cancerous lesions and turn into malignant tumors. Blueberry extract greatly reduced formation of such abnormal tissues.
Blueberry extract also prevented angiogenesis or the formation of new blood vessels that feed the tumors. Cancer has the ability to spread to adjacent or distant organs. Tumor cells can penetrate the blood (and lymphatic) vessels and spread throughout the body. For the metastatic spread of cancer a network of blood (and lymphatic) vessels is important. The formation of new blood vessels is called angiogenesis. (The formation of new lymph vessels is called lymphangiogenesis.) Blueberry extract curtails this growth of blood vessels and increases survival rate in cancer patients. It also has the ability to inhibit enzyme responsible for the proliferation of cancer cells. And last but not least, the extract triggers apoptosis or cancer cells' death.
Vision
Antioxidants in blueberries help protect the retina from oxidative damage. They also protect the retina from damage caused by the sun. Anthocyanosides in blueberries provide protection against such disorders as the age-related macular degeneration, myopia, cataracts, glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, extreme dryness and retinal infections. People who consume blueberries on regular basis report improved night vision.
Urinary Tract
Just like cranberries, blueberries contain compounds that prevent E. coli bacteria from adhering to the walls of the bladder. According to latest research this helps ward off the urinary tract infections.
Weight Management
As I mentioned before, blueberries have a very low glycemic index and help balance blood sugar. This helps people with weight problems to reduce cravings. Blueberries help lower triglycerides and cholesterol
levels, and improve fasting glucose and insulin sensitivity. Moreover, polyphenols and catechins found in blueberries help activate fat-burning
genes in abdominal fat cells. And last but not least, fiber in blueberries helps improve digestion and elimination. All these factors combined with active lifestyle, exercise and sensible calorie intake may contribute to a desired weight loss.

Health Benefits of Beets
The beet (Beta vulgaris) is a herbaceous biennial plant in the Amarathaceae-Chenopodiaceae family that is best known in its numerous cultivated varieties, of which the beetroot, or the garden beet, is the most popular.
Medicinal use of beets dates back to Ancient Rome where the bulbous roots and the leaves were used to cure variety of ailments that included fever, constipation, blood conditions and law libido.
The roots come in a variety of colors that can range from deep purple to golden yellow and white. The roots are round or oblong and are attached to purple-green leaves that are rich in vitamins, minerals and carotenoids and can also be eaten.

A word of caution
Beets and, especially, the beet leaves, contain oxalic acid that has been implicated in the formation of kidney stones. Oxalates also interfere with the absorption of calcium within the body.
Individuals with a kidney stones history should eat beets in moderation or avoid them completely.

Nattokinase - The Secret to Japanese Longevity

Recently a new enzyme with potent fibrinolytic activity, that rivals
pharmaceutical agents, has been discovered and shows great potential in
providing support for hyper-coagulative states and in supporting the
activation of many of the bodies 3,000 endogenous enzymes. This all
natural enzyme, Nattokinase, is derived from fermented soy and the
bacteria Bacillus natto. Already, backed by strong and novel research,
Nattokinase shows promise in supporting areas such as cardiovascular
disease, stroke, angina, venous stasis, thrombosis, embolism,
atherosclerosis, fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue,
retinal pathology, hemorrhoid, varicose veins, soft tissue rheumatism, muscle
spasm, poor healing, chronic inflammation and pain, peripheral vascular
disease, hypertension, tissue oxygen deprivation, infertility, and other
gynecology conditions (e.g. endometriosis, uterine fibroids).
There are three major groups of biological enzymes:
- Food Enzymes
- Digestive Enzymes
- Metabolic Enzymes.
In the past, the
therapeutic use of enzymes has largely focused on the use of digestive
enzymes. Digestive enzymes can be directly beneficial because they
assist in digestion, help regulate immune responses in the intestinal
tract, and relieve the body of its relative requirement of digestive
enzyme production, allowing for biological energy and resources to be
further allocated to the production of metabolic enzymes, indirectly.
Recently, however, a new enzyme has been isolated from a traditional
fermented Japanese food (although it is consumed by other cultures in
the same or similar forms), that appears to have metabolic effects and
to work directly in concert with the metabolic enzymes. This means that
it will complement the somewhat different digestive enzymes.
The name of this new enzyme is Nattokinase (meaning the enzyme from
Natto) and has been called, "The Enzyme of Enzymes” by its discoverer,
Dr. Hiroyuki Sumi. Natto has been used in Japanese culture for over 1000
years for its popular taste and as a folk remedy for heart and vascular
diseases, and now we know why: it contains Nattokinase, a very potent
fibrinolytic (breaks down fibrin, a blood clotting protein) enzyme,
which has shown remarkable ability to affect blood clotting and a
possible ability to regulate and activate various other metabolic
enzymes. Natto is produced by a fermentation process by adding Bacillus
natto, a beneficial bacterium, to boiled soybeans. The resulting
nattokinase enzyme, is produced when Bacillus natto acts on the
soybeans. Nattokinase has been the subject of 17 studies, including two
small human trials. While other soy foods contain enzymes, it is only
the natto preparation that contains the specific nattokinase enzyme.
Nattokinase & Fibrin
Fibrin is a protein that when activated forms fibrinogen, which is
responsible for blood clotting. This is an important and protective
mechanism that protects the body from excessive bleeding, say, when you
cut yourself. However, in many instances, this process becomes
over-activated or becomes "stuck” in high gear. This irregular clotting
has been implicated in a variety of serious health conditions, namely,
cardiovascular disease. The magnificent thing about Nattokinase is that
it appears to have many, if not most, of the benefits of pharmaceutical
agents designed to regulate blood clotting (e.g. Warfarin, Heparin,
t-PA, Urokinase, etc), without any of the side effects of these
medications. Furthermore, while these medications have to be injected
and only provide a very brief time of benefit (a few hours), Nattokinase
is effective when taken orally and its benefits linger many times
longer. Standard doses of Nattokinase vary from 250-1,000 mg and
positive effects can be seen with as little as 50 mg.
Blood clots form when strands of protein called fibrin accumulate in a
blood vessel. In the heart, blood clots cause blockage of blood flow to
muscle tissue. If blood flow is blocked, the oxygen supply to that
tissue is cut off and it eventually dies. This can result in angina and
heart attacks. Clots in chambers of the heart can mobilize to the brain.
In the brain, blood clots also block blood and oxygen from reaching
necessary areas, which can result in senility and/or stroke.
Fibrinolytic enzymes are normally generated in the cells of the blood
vessels. As the body ages, production of these enzymes begins to
decline, making blood more prone to coagulation. Since these cells exist
throughout the body, such as in the arteries, veins and lymphatic
system, poor production of thrombolytic enzymes can lead to the
development of clotting prone conditions virtually anywhere in the body.
Researchers from Biotechnology Research Laboratories and JCR
Pharmaceuticals Co. of Kobe, Japan, tested Nattokinase’s ability to
dissolve a thrombus in the carotid arteries of rats. Animals treated
with Nattokinase regained 62 percent of blood flow, whereas those
treated with plasmin regained just 15.8 percent of blood flow.
Researchers from JCR Pharmaceuticals, Oklahoma State University, and
Miyazaki Medical College tested nattokinase on 12 healthy Japanese
volunteers (6 men and 6 women, between the ages of 21 and 55). They gave
the volunteers 200 grams of natto (the food) before breakfast, and then
tracked fibrinolytic activity through a series of blood plasma tests.
The tests indicated that the natto generated a heightened ability to
dissolve blood clots: On average, the volunteers’ ELT (a measure of how
long it takes to dissolve a blood clot) dropped by 48 percent within two
hours of treatment, and volunteers retained an enhanced ability to
dissolve blood clots for 2 to 8 hours. As a control, researchers later
fed the same amount of boiled soybeans to the same volunteers and
tracked their fibrinolytic activity. The tests showed no significant
change.
Nattokinase appears to have the added benefit of significantly reducing
elevated blood pressure (an often concomitant condition in
cardiovascular disease risk factors, such as high fibrin). Nattokinase
appears to be safe, and has been used for over 1,000 years safely with
no reports of toxicity. Various other nutritional supplements / herbs
have been reported to have fibronlytic activity; however, the potency of
Nattokinase appears to be superior. Furthermore, Nattokinase also
appears to be an activator of various other metabolic enzymes and
vitamins, cleaving them from their inactive to their active forms. The
strength and magnitude of this direct support for the metabolic enzymes
of the body, from an oral enzyme supplement, is unique to Nattokinase
and shows great promise as a nutritional supportive agent in exciting
and diverse ways.

Why Laughter is the Best Medicine

It is impossible to feel stressed when you laugh. Laughter has been shown to be beneficial for our health in a number of ways. When we laugh our physiology literally changes. Our blood pressure goes down and our heart health benefits. There is a release of the body’s natural “happy hormones” the endorphins, which lift our mood and a reduction in the production of the stress hormones adrenalin and cortisol. We tend to breathe more deeply which is good for the lungs and the supply of oxygen to the cells. Our blood vessels relax improving blood circulation.

In addition to this, laughter has a positive effect on the immune system and also the brain. There are also social benefits. It is hard to be angry with someone when you are laughing. A shared laugh strengthens relationships and enhances teamwork. This is why many companies employ comedians for staff development days. In fact the overall effect of laughter on our well being is a similar one to the effect of exercise.
Between political correctness and general busyness people tend to laugh less these days. Somewhere in the growing up years we seem to lose our capacity to laugh spontaneously. It is estimated that children laugh over 300 times a day compared to around 20 for adults. Children see the funny side of just about anything and laugh at things adults regard as “silly”. Maybe it is the children who have got it right and it is the adults who are being silly by not laughing more.
The late Leslie Nielsen had the ability to make many people laugh. His roles in Flying High and The Naked Gun movies (amongst other roles) made millions of people laugh. To be honest, watching the academy awards scene in Naked Gun 33 1/3 made me laugh so much I cried. Even seeing it again years later I was in tears. The humor is classic and to a degree dateless as my children who were born some years after the film was made also cracked up despite it being “an old film, Dad”.
So what else can you do to laugh more? Reading the comics in the paper, watching comedies instead of serious films, getting a joke of the day calendar, watch funny videos on the net. Dare I say even laugh at the joke emails which do the rounds.
Some people really struggle to laugh and there are now classes being run on how to laugh. There is even a form of laughter yoga. Strange as it sounds some of us need to relearn how to laugh and these sorts of classes can be very beneficial.
Step one is a change in attitude. Everything has a funny side if you look for it. Next time, rather than get frustrated at events in life, laugh at them. We cannot influence all the events in life but we can control how we respond to them.
Choosing to look for the funny side and to be less serious will benefit your health and the more of us who do this the more society will benefit as well.

Health Benefits of Chili Peppers
Chili pepper also called chile pepper or chilli pepper, from Nahuatl term "chilli," is the fruit of a plant from the genus Capsicum, in the nightshade family, Solanaceae. Chili peppers originally grew in America, but spread around the world after the discovery of the continent by Christopher Columbus.
The fiery fruit found its way into many ethnic cuisines. Its medicinal qualities were quickly discovered and applied for variety of ailments. Modern science confirms most of the popular uses.
The main active compund that gives chili peppers their intensity when ingested or applied topically is capsaicin (8-methyl-N-vanillyl-6-nonenamide). Several other related chemicals, collectively called capsaicinoids, work in synergy to the same effect.
Chili contains vitamin A, C, B6, and folate. When ripe and red, it contains significant amounts of beta carotene. The hot fruit is also an important source of phosphorus, iron, sodium, magnesium and silica. They are also rich in lycopene, lutein, and zeaxantin - compounds that help fight free radicals in the body.
Regular intake of chili peppers delays oxidation of serum lipids, and lowers and improves insulin and glucose profiles following a meal, both of which contribute to a reduced risk of cardiovascular disease.
Australian researchers also demonstrated that the amount of insulin required to lower blood sugar after a meal is reduced if the meal contained chili pepper. When chili was consumed on regular basis, the insulin requirements dropped even more.
The benefits of chili may even increase with a higher body mass index - an obesity indicator. In obesse individuals, chili not only significantly reduces the amount of insulin required to lower blood sugar levels after a meal, but it also results in a lower ratio of C-peptide to insulin, an indication that the rate at which the liver is clearing insulin has increased.
The levels of C-peptide in the blood also indicate how much insulin is being produced by the pancreas. The pancreas produces proinsulin, which splits into insulin and C-peptide when it is secreted into the bloodstream. Each molecule of proinsulin breaks into one molecule of C-peptide and one molecule of insulin. Lower levels of C-peptide indicate that less insulin has been secreted into the bloodstream. Since chili positively affects this ration, regular consumption of chili may help prevent adult diabetes.

Hot peppers can provide some relief for cold and sinus problems because capsaicin has as expectorant effect. It increases lung function and facilitates the elimination of mucus.
There is a strong scientific evidence that capsaiconoids in chili boost metabolic rate. This brings hope to many who wish to lose weight. Chili stimulates receptors in the bowel when a spicy meal is eaten and increases thermogenesis. Increased heat means increased energy expenditure and thus the boost to the metabolic rate. It must be said, however, that excessive consumption of hot chili peppers may irritate stomach in sensitive individuals. A safer option for weight loss is available on the market in form of a non-irritant capsaicin pill.
Capsaicin has been used externally with great success to control pain. Such conditions as painful joints, arthritic inflammation, muscle pain, athletic injuries, and frostbite improved considerably with topical application of capsaicin containing ointments. Scientists in Scandinavia found out that capsaicin increases the DNA synthesis and triggers production of pain suppressing collagenase and prostaglandin.
Since capsaicin improves blood circulation, hot chili may be used as an aphrodisiac. It is wise, however, to avoid contact with the genitalia as the stinging may have an adverse effect.
Adding a little chili to daily meals not only makes a bland diet tastier and more appealing, but, most importantly, helps prevent disease and improve many degenerative conditions associated with aging.

Nutrition for a Healthy Heart
The heart is the body's strongest muscle which is not bigger than its owner's clenched fist. It sits in the middle of the chest cavity, between two lungs, well protected behind the breast bone.
A healthy heart contracts and relaxes something between 70 and 80 times per minute. Each heartbeat delivers fresh blood to the four chambers of the heart.
This small organ works without respite, beating approximately 100,000 times a day or about 40 million times a year. It supplies the body with oxygen and nutrients, clearing away, at the same time, all harmful waste.
A strong and healthy heart is absolutely vital for our well being and longevity. Unfortunately, modern lifestyles often have detrimental effects on this organ. Stress, smoking, alcohol abuse, lack of physical activity, unhealthy diet, high blood pressure, and obesity are the major factors contributing to heart disease.
Statistics show that heart disease is the leading cause of death in the industrialized world. Heart disease is also on the rise in the third world countries.
Heart disease includes various conditions affecting the heart, such as the coronary heart disease, heart attack, congestive heart failure, rheumatic heart disease, and congenital heart disease.
People who were diagnosed with heart disease or who have multiple risk factors for developing it, should have their blood tested at least twice a year to monitor their condition. A comprehensive blood test should measure levels of blood lipids, C-reactive protein, homocysteine, fibrinogen, and other important blood markers. Regular blood pressure monitoring is also important.
Like many other diseases, heart disease is preventable. Interestingly enough, even the smallest changes in lifestyle reduce the risk of developing cardiovascular disease. While it is not always easy to change long established eating habits, paying attention to what we eat may be life saving. It is a well established fact that foods high in saturated fat and sodium, contribute to heart disease. Replacing such foods with healthier options and adding fresh fruit and vegetable, whole grains, legumes, fish and poultry, will help reduce the risk of developing hart disease.
Among others, heart health protocol should address factors such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, blood clothing, high blood levels of homocysteine, and vascular inflammation.
Heart healthy diet should include:
- Salmon - excellent source of healthy Omega-3 fatty acids that reduce inflammation and the abnormal blood clotting
- Oats - good source of cholesterol lowering beta-glucans
- Olive oil - well known for its ability to reduce low density lipoprotein or the "bad cholesterol"

- Tomatoes - rich in lycopene which is well known for its antioxidant properties
- Garlic - rich in allicin, a compound known for its blood thinning properties
- Whole grains - rich in dietary fiber known for its ability to lower the bad cholesterol
- Apples - rich in flavonoid quercetin which helps reduce inflammation and prevents blood from clothing
- Red wine - source of powerful antioxidant resveratrol
- Almonds - good source of magnesium which regulates the heart rhythm
- Green tea - helps lower the bad cholesterol and relaxes the arteries
Cardiovascular protocol should also include nutritional supplements that are known for their heart protecting properties:
- Coenzyme Q10 - helps deliver fatty acids into the heart cells thus ensuring proper cell function
- L-carnitine - an amino acid which helps deliver energy sources into the heart cells for proper functioning of the heart muscle
