It is a shock to the patient. It is a shock to the patient's relatives. What follows the diagnosis cannot be described in words. No one can understand the fear unless he or she has been diagnosed.

A cascade of questions follows the diagnosis. What went wrong? How did this happen? What caused it? Could I have done something differently? Is there anything I can do to slow the progress of the disease? What are my chances? How can I mitigate side effects? What can I eat? etc. etc. etc.

Fear, guilt, uncertainty about the therapy and its outcome follow the patient like a shadow.

Once the therapy has been chosen by the oncologist, the patient has to deal with horrifying side effects. Depending on the type of therapy or the drugs used, the patient experiences

weakened immune system

high blood pressure

anemia

loss of appetite

changes in taste

indigestion

constipation

diarrhea

nausea

vomiting

increased urination

kidney dysfunction

muscle loss

skin and nail changes

hair loss

fatigue

confusion

overall weakness

to name the most common and visible ones.

Patients who asked their oncologist for nutritional advice are often told that they can eat anything they want but might have to lose weight if they are obese. The more lucky ones are told to try the Mediterranean diet that is known for its overall health benefits.

Why is food even important?

We all need nutrients, but people undergoing cancer therapy even more so. They need to build up strength and stamina, strengthen their immune system, and nourish their bodies that are being weakened by cancer and the cancer treatment drugs. Some foods might be better than others, so how do we choose the right ones?

Although the food industry does not want us to know, many of the food items that we consume daily contain unhealthy ingredients, some of them carcinogenic or cancer growth promoting. Some of the worst foods and substances for cancer patients or anyone who wants to stay healthy, for that matter, include:

sugar and refined carbohydrates such as bread, cornflakes, cakes, cookies, pastry, donuts, ice cream, or pasta

processed meats like hot dogs, corned beef, ham, bacon, or summer sausage

fried, deep fried and charred foods

conventional dairy

alcohol.

Anything processed and packaged is full of added sugar, high fructose syrup, or artificial sweeteners, hydrogenated fats, preserving agents, artificial coloring, and chemical flavors. Just check the list of ingredients. Some ingredients might not even be listed if they are present at an incidental level. Some are listed as "spices," "flavors," "natural" or "artificial flavoring" that can combine countless chemical ingredients and are usually considered to be the manufacturer's protected "secret" formulas.

Understanding how fast food, junk food, and packaged foods of all kinds, are affecting our bodies, we all shall agree that in order to prevent chronic disease, heal from cancer, or stay healthy for as long as possible, we must eat food that is full of vital nutrients and free from disease- or inflammation-causing chemicals.

Many nutritionists would suggest that patients eat more fruit and vegetable, preferably organic, add some fish and chicken, beans, whole grains, nuts, and spices to their meal plan, and drink plenty of purified water and organic green tea. But what if the therapy makes it impossible for the patient to even hold the food down?

I am an advocate of raw food lifestyle that includes foods like raw fruits, vegetables and sprouted nuts that are rich in enzymes, vitamins, minerals, fiber, and various health promoting phytonutrients. I understand that roughage in raw foods might cause some discomfort in patients with compromised digestive tracts due to chemotherapy. However, turning a salad into a juice, healthy smoothie or a nutritious raw soup, would make the raw food more easily digestible and still deliver the nutrients needed for optimal health. Just juice or blend the ingredients in a blender, add a few drops of virgin olive oil, some chopped fresh herbs and organic spices, and voilà! Your raw soup is ready.

Some immune system modulating nutrients, like vitamin C and vitamin D for instance, must be supplemented. Supplements like Pectasol, graviola, curcumin, sulforaphane, medicinal mushrooms, laetrile, hydrogen, probiotics, alapha lipoic acid, or melatonin, are also often included in the protocols since they all support the patient's immune system.

Fermented foods like kimchi and sauerkraut can help restore healthy gut microbiome and help with digestion and nutrient absorption.

Natural solutions like ginger tea made of sliced fresh ginger and purified water, might help the patient manage nausea without horrible side effects.

Patients undergoing cancer therapy may experience severe dehydration. They must replace the lost fluids and electrolytes. Electrolytes are minerals such as sodium, potassium, chloride, calcium and magnesium. These minerals are vital for maintaining key bodily functions. The best way to replenish the lost electrolytes naturally is to add a tiny pinch of pink Himalayan salt and some freshly pressed lemon juice into a glass of purified water. Fresh coconut water straight out of a fresh young coconut works as well. By all means avoid sports drinks since they are either loaded with sugar or are full of artificial sweeteners and flavors.

Dr. Lodi, whom I consider to be one of the most interesting personalities in the field of integrative oncology, has a full protocol for cancer patients that involves, among others, raw food, juicing and fasting. The patient must change the "terrain" in which cancer proliferates, and make his own body inhospitable to new cancer cells.

Oncogenesis is a complex process, but patients can learn new strategies that promote healing and recovery.

To support the immune system, healthy eating habits are vital for any patient undergoing cancer therapy, but in order to heal, the whole lifestyle must be changed.

A health coach would suggest

weight loss (where necessary)

increased physical activity (wherever possible)

emotional well being

stress control

restorative sleep

environment free of toxins and harmful chemicals

life free of destructive relationship.

If you want to heal, surround yourself with people you can trust. Find a support group. Find a registered nutritionist who understands cancer. Stop watching the news on TV. Resolve your conflicts. De-clutter your house. Find a hobby that would enrich your mind and soul.

All this might seem overwhelming at first but you can do it gradually, one item at a time. Ask for help. Hire a coach. Hire a personal trainer. Mobilize family members to do the tasks you are unable to do. Create environment in which you can heal.

Your disease is not a punishment. It developed over time in an environment that wasn't conducive to health. To get healthy, you have to revise your beliefs and change your habits. Qualified people can show you how to do this but no one can do it for you. You are the master of your own universe.

As Dr. Lodi says, you are not your diagnosis. You can activate your healing potential, but the healing will take time, so be patient. Trust in your body's ability to heal. You are magnificent. Persevere! Don't ever give up.

By Dominique Allmon

Dominique Allmon©2023

This article was first published on my Heaven Can Wait blog

For healthy raw food recipes please visit my Passionately Raw! raw food blog.

For a life saving information please visit Dr. Lodi's website.

* I am not affiliated with Dr. Lodi.

Information in this article is for educational purposes only.

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">Like many other bodily functions, memory declines as we age. Those first signs of slipping memory can be a little alarming, especially if you know the dreariness of that route. You may first see it in your 40s, sometimes even younger, with declining memory symptoms like slower facial recall, where you left your keys or what was the number you were supposed to call. How many times did you go to a supermarket and wondered what groceries were you supposed to buy? Wait! You forgot your grocery list at home.

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">These episodes are often dismissed as harmless and may simply be the result of increased stress, but while it’s normal to forget things on occasion, it’s a pattern to watch.

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">Gerontologists, psychologists, longevity researchers, and the makers of natural memory supplements like the Brain Pill, believe it’s important to keep your brain active. Use it or lose it. This is how simple it actually is.

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">To stay mentally agile into old age you have to challenge your memory daily! Although not a muscle, your brain needs a workout just like the muscles of your body. And just like any other body organ, it also needs specific nutrition to support and retain its function. So, what can you do right now?

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">Here are <span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">nine strate<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;"><span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">gies that can help<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;"> boost<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;"> your memory:

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">Use Your Memory Daily – Your brain needs a workout just like the rest of your body. Try crosswords, for example, or read a section of the newspaper you’d normally skip. You might also take a different route to work, for example, or learn another language, or how to play a musical instrument.

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">Socialize – You’re not an island, darling. Depression and stress can both lead to dramatic decline of memory, which is why you’ll want to socialize often – especially if you live alone. Be with others and take them up on their invitations. Join a club, take dancing lessons, start a poetry circle. Anything. Just get social. Life gets better when you do.

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">Organize Your Life – You lose points with a cluttered home because you’re more likely to misplace stuff and forget where you put it. Make lists and notes of appointments and things to do in a special notebook or your calendar, or create a large board where you write down or pin important appointments and things you need to do. Or, if you are more comfortable with the technology, download an app on your iPod and write down what needs to get done. Speak it out loud too, to reinforce it in your memory, and check-off your tasks when completed.

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">Stay Focused - This is very important! Try to stay focused on the task at hand and limit distractions. Multi-tasking is great, but when your memory is in trouble, one thing at a time is better. You’re more likely to recall information if you concentrate specifically on that one thing rather than all the many things you were trying to accomplish at the same time. In other words, focus on what you want to remember later and you will recall it faster when needed.

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">Get Enough Sleep – Shut-eye helps your memory! Most adults need seven to eight hours of sleep each night so make time for adequate rest. Go to bed earlier if you have to and work on your sleep hygiene. You will be surprised. Your recall will improve with time and you will remember more stuff the next day.

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">Eat Healthy Food – Do you see any pattern here? Your brain likes healthy living. That extends to your diet, with plenty of fruits, vegetables and whole grains. Opt for high quality protein, like fish and poultry.<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;"> Drink plenty of water too, refrain from drugs and watch the alcohol intake. Consult a certified nutritionist for an optimal brain supporting nutrition plan and learn what foods support the memory function.

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">Exercise Daily – Exercise boosts blood flow throughout your body and to the brain. According to the <span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;"><span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">Department of Health and Human Services, you need at least 150 minutes of moderate aerobic activity (like walking) each week, or 75 minutes of something with greater intensity, like jogging, although even a few 10 minute brisk walks per day will make a difference.

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">Watch Your Health – Chronic conditions can affect your memory, to say nothing about the rest of your health and well-being. Follow your doctor’s recommendations, be it for depression, your heart, kidneys, or anything else in your medical history. Review your medications often with your doctor as well since some medications can reduce your memory. As your fitness level improves you may need less and less medication. Lose weight if needed and have your blood tested for nutrient deficiencies. Take nutritional supplements to support healthy diet.

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;"><span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">Add Nutritional Supplements - <span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">Even people whose nutrition and diet are normally healthy, need to <span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">take nutritional supplements as they age. <span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">To function properly the brain needs Omega<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">-3 fatty acids<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">; <span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">B vitamins, especially folic acid, B6 and B12<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">; antioxidants such as vitamins E<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;"> and C<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">, and the coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10)<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">; <span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;"><span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">magnesium; herbal supplements such as Huperzine A, vinpocetine, ginseng, an<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">d ginko biloba; and nutraceuticals such<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;"> as the virgin coconut oil and turmeric.

The first time I heard about lithium orotate was five or six years ago in South Africa. I had a friend who suffered from severe mood swings and depression and suggested that she should try this nutritional supplement that was already popular in South Africa. She declined and delivered herself into a psychiatric care. I have never heard from her again.

It is not my intention to judge anyone, but to this day I do not understand why would my friend opt for heavy psychotropic drugs instead of trying to balance brain chemistry naturally.

There are many natural supplements that can help improve mood and prevent depression. One such versatile supplement is lithium orothate that was first formulated by the famous German orthomolecular scientist and physician, Dr. Hans Nieper.

What Is Lithium Orotate?

An alkali metal related to sodium and potassium, lithium has been
traditionally used within allopathic medicine to treat mental imbalances
such as anxiety and depression. However, there are many side effects to
taking this strong mineral, as the body poorly absorbs the standard
forms of lithium carbonate. That is, until lithium orotate was
discovered.

Lithium orotate
offers superior bio-utilization for the human body, allowing the
mineral to penetrate the mitochondria, glia and lysosomes that exist
within the intracellular structures of our cells. The mineral stabilizes
these lysosomal membranes, slowing the enzymatic reaction that leads to
many of the negative side effects of other forms of lithium salts.

Most people are unaware that lithium is not a drug, but is a naturally occurring mineral from the earth. Just like calcium and potassium, lithium is something that every human body requires for mental and physical health.

Many people are familiar with the pharmaceutical forms of lithium
(lithium carbonate and lithium citrate), these aforementioned chemical
extracts used to treat mania and depression.

Lithium orotate is very different than the other forms of the
mineral. Whereas pharmaceutical drug forms of lithium require high doses
to penetrate our cells, lithium orotate is only needed in extremely
small serving size, considering the fact that a massive amount of the
mineral penetrates the cell (approximately 97%). The other great news is
that unlike its pharmaceutical counterparts, lithium orotate is

Neuroprotection From Environmental Toxins - Lithium has been shown to protect the system from numerous toxins, particularly in the grey matter of the brain.

Other lithium benefits include:

Lyme Disease

Low white blood cell counts

Juvenile convulsive disease

Alcoholism and liver disorders

Pain associated with migraine and cluster headaches

Hyperthyroidism and other thyroid diseases: Studies show that lithium may aid in the even distribution of iodine.

Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), as well as a general stress reducer.

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and Attention
Deficit Disorder (ADD) and aggression: Studies show that individuals
taking Lithium experienced lowered levels of rage and anger, as well as
improved memory.

Alzheimer’s disease and dementia

In the reduction of myopia (nearsightedness) and glaucoma: Dr. Hans
Nieper found that glaucoma patients could benefit from the dehydrating
effect of lithium on the eye, offering patients vision improvement and a
lowering of intraocular pressure.

Bipolar disorder: Orotates may lessen effects of manic or depressive
episodes. Lithium has been shown to serve as an effective mood balancer
in 70-80 percent of bipolar patients.

Depression: the therapeutic serving of lithium orotate is 150
mg/day. This is compared to 900-1800 mg of the prescription forms. In
this range of lithium orotate, there are no adverse side effects and no
need for monitoring blood serum measurements.

Precaution

Do not attempt to self-medicate a mental imbalance with lithium
orotate. Speak with your health care provider for more information.
Pregnant and nursing women should not take any type of lithium
supplement.

Also, lithium should not be taken by those with renal or
cardiovascular diseases, severe dehydration or exhaustion, sodium
depletion, or in individuals using any form of diuretics or ACE
inhibitors.

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">Preparing for the cold season

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">For those of us living in the northern latitudes winter may be a very challenging season. With lower outside temperatures we may experience colds and flu as well as other unpleasant illnesses and symptoms.

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">
There is, however, a way to protect yourself from infections. You simply have to boost your immune system and implement a few simple strategies that will help you stay fit and healthy during the winter months.

By preparing your immune system and strengthening your immune response, you will be able to pass through the cold season without an infection and if you catch a cold, your symptoms will be less severe and you will recover much faster.

Your immune system acts like a protective shield that thwarts harmful pathogens from attacking your organism. In contact with pathogens a series of reactions are taking place within your body. Cells, organs and tissues of your immune system are mobilized to disable the pathogens. The symptoms you may experience (fever, for instance), although very unpleasant, are the signs of a well functioning immune system. Using medication to suppress these symptoms will only weaken your immune system. Instead, you should support your immune system with herbs and natural remedies, get enough rest, and let your body recover from infection all by yourself. You may want to take natural supplements to ease your symptoms, but as the common wisdom goes, it takes a week to cure the cold with drugs, but only seven days to recover without them.

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">In order for your immune system to function properly, you need to support it with proper nutrition, nutritional supplements and herbs. It is important that you eat more fresh fruit and vegetables (preferably organic) that are rich in vitamins, esp. vitamin C, and minerals, esp. zinc. Zinc may be the most important micro nutrient for your immune system. It is needed for the stimulation of the white blood cells that are important elements of your defense system. People who are deficient in zinc are more susceptible to infections. Zinc works in synergy with vitamin C and in order to be effective in your body it must be taken with its co-factor amino acid Histidine. Taken alone, zinc may be ineffective as the foods you eat interfere with its absorption, especially when you are a vegetarian. The recommended dose is 15 mg per day with up to 1000 mg vitamin C and 100-500 mg Histidine. The other important vitamin for the immune system is the vitamin D3 which works in the body as a potent antibiotic. Vitamin D3 helps the body to increase the production of body's own antimicrobial peptides. The body uses these peptides to destroy pathogenic organisms, including the influenza virus. The suggested dose is 2,000 IU. Another very effective supplement is the polysaccharide beta glucan. The insoluble beta glucans 1,3 and 1,6 derived from medicinal mushrooms and from yeast are very effective immune system modulators and do not overstimulate the immune system. There is no established daily dose of beta glucans, but manufacturers suggest 500-1,000 mg as an effective dose for the enhancement of the immune system.

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">The Nature supplied us with very effective herbs and power foods that have the ability to boost the immune system and help us stay healthy during winter. They have unique immune enhancing properties and can be used in many different situations to support our overall immune response. They are time tested in many cultures and can be purchased in form of capsules, teas or tinctures in any health food store or pharmacy. Some can simply be used as foods and may be used to enhance your winter cooking.

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">Here is a list of my favorite winter remedies in random order. You may already know most of them, or maybe wish to try something new this winter:

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;"> andrographis

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">manuka honey

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;"> astragalus

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">raw apple cider vinegar

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">German chamomile taken as herbal infusion

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">lime flowers taken as herbal infusion

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">citrus fruit

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;"> colostrum

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">lactoferrin, vitamin C and zinc

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;"> eleutherococus

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;"> echinacea purpura

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">Umckaloabo (South African Pelargonium Root)

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">garlic

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">onions

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">lacto-fermented, unpasteurized sauerkraut

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">unpasteurized kimchi, preferably home-made

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;"> ginger

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">turmeric

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;"> hot peppers

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;"> raw local honey

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;"> propolis

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;"> royal jelly

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">elderberry sirup

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;"> rose hips

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">seabuckthorn

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">medicinal mushrooms, such as reishi, maitake, cordiceps, hericium, and shiitake

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;"> essential oils of cinnamon, thyme, rosemary, eucalyptus, mint, and lavender used in aromatherapy lamp

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">The list does not end here. These are, however, the best known and most widely used and time tested winter remedies. Some of them are to be taken as tinctures or infusions, as pills or capsules; others are simply added to your daily meals, or used in aromatherapy and for inhalations to clear the sinus congestion. They all have strong anti-viral and anti-bacterial properties and are known to activate and support the immune system. Chose the ones you feel comfortable with and take them systematically to build up your immune system.

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">If you catch your first cold, remember to never ever take antibiotics. Antibiotics are designed to kill bacteria not viruses, but common cold and flu are caused by viruses that are unresponsive to antibiotic treatment. There are about 200 different viruses that cause the flu symptoms!

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">
Antibiotics will only weaken your immune system as they destroy the flora in the small intestine which is the seat of the immune system in the body. You will only end up in a vicious cycle. Instead, take a concentrated action to boost the activity of your immune system. Do not wait for the symptoms to fully develop to a flu. Take time to heal your infection, rest and relax as much as you can. Sleep is vital as our immune system recovers during the night.

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">In addition you may want to implement some lifestyle changes during the winter:

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">Wash your hands as often as you can, especially when you come home from work.

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;"> Avoid sick people.

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;"> Dress up for winter - keep you body warm, especially your hands and feet.

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;"> Keep your blood circulating! The idea of taking alternate warm and cold showers in the morning may sound outrageous, but you will soon notice that your body feels warm even in the coldest weather. Use ginger and hot peppers to spice your meals and drink spiced chai instead of ice tea.

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">Put as much fresh fruit and vegetables on your plate as you possibly can.

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;"> Reduce the consumption of mucus producing foods such as diary and white bread.

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;"> Exercise moderately and spend some time outside.

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;"> Eat fresh fruits and vegetables.

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;"> Supplement with best possible immune supporting products.

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;"> Take high quality multivitamin and bio-available minerals formula.

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;"> Rest, relax and pamper yourself.

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;"> Get enough sleep. Remember that your immune system recovers during the night.

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;"> Reduce your caffeine and alcohol consumption, and if you smoke, stop smoking as this habit deprives your body of the vitamin C which is so important to your immune system.

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">Take precautions not to pass your infection on to others.

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">Preparing your immune system for winter and implementing a few simple strategies will help you enjoy the beauty of this season and pass through it without infection.

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">Be gentle with your body and take time to relax and contemplate the changes in nature. And no matter how cold and dark it is outside, always let the sun shine from the inside out.

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">

<div style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif; text-align: justify;">
Many people experience emotional discomfort or a feeling of being powerless in face of certain circumstances. Some people can cope better than others as they consider difficulties to be a component part of life. For others the daily struggle may have a debilitating effect. They develop irrational fears and anxiety.

Each of us can get affected, but sometimes we manage to find a solution or receive help from others and everything returns to a more or less perfect order. We are either mobilized to action or completely "paralyzed" by the situation and our emotional response to it.

Some of us are naturally better at solving problems than others. Some people are simply unable to cope alone and need help. They seem to have a perfect memory of the difficulties experienced before and begin to worry that the same situation will occur again. They begin to worry that they will not be prepared or able to deal with it. They expect the signs of the coming demise to show up in every new situation and develop anxiety. With time they become anxious that they will not be able to cope with almost anything and spent a lot of their mental and emotional resources trying to "prevent" situations that may never occur. And although some fears may be justified, others are "irrational". The feeling of inadequacy is debilitating and makes a simple day to day existence very challenging. The fear of failure and anxiety not only make our existence painful, but they also prevent us from personal growth.

There are many ways to deal with chronic anxiety. Meditation, prayer, yoga, psychotherapy, autogenic training, and medication are the strategies that work to different degrees in different people. Anti-anxiety medication is a very popular quick fix to the problem, but many people are reluctant to take drugs. They are looking for natural solution instead. Once again Nature provides us with time-tested remedies.

Herbs such as

kava kava

valerian root

passion flower

St. John's Worth

tulsi (holy basil)

red ginseng

rhodiola

catnip

ashwagandha

lemon balm

lemongrass

German chamomile

lavender

are very effective and work for most people.

They provide calm, but do not cause lethargy. Some of them can be used in aromatherapy while others can be taken in form of capsules, tinctures, or drank as tea. Unlike capsules, a warm herbal infusions can add a feeling of comfort on a bad day.

Since most herbs are rather bitter, you may have to add some honey, stevia, or maple syrup to your infusion. Do not, however, get tempted to save calories and sweeten your infusion with artificial sweeteners. Artificial sweeteners are well known for their adverse activity in the brain. They disrupt the flow and synthesis of neurotransmitters in the brain thus further contributing to emotional imbalance.

Anxiety has a debilitating effect on relationships as well and should be addressed as early as possible. No one likes to be around gloomy or anxious people and the anxious person may end up alone and lonely with his or her vision of doom.

Herbs are wonderful and very effective, but it may time to improve one's delicate chemistry. Very often behavioral therapy is needed. A certified therapist with a holistic approach may be exactly what a person suffering from chronic anxiety requires.

Like no other season winter puts an incredible strain on your skin. The cold temperatures outdoors and heated room indoors are more than even the healthiest skin can tolerate - the moisture levels drop and skin looks and feels dull and dehydrated. Thanks goodness, this problems can easily be alleviated with a little extra care, but you have to be consequent in your daily if you want to see some success.

Winter Skincare Protocol

No matter what your complexion, you may have to change your skincare products in order to adapt your skin to subzero temperatures. Also remember that skin can become sensitive during the winter months and you may not be able to tolerate your favorite products.

Cleansing - use gentle, perfume-free cleansing products to remove make up and cleanse your skin. By all means, void harsh soaps and scented cleansers! When washing your face, use lukewarm water to wash off any product residue. Finish with a few splashes of cold water to allow blood circulation.

Exfoliation - Once a week, use a gentle, unscented exfoliator to remove dry skin and even out your complexion. I love to use raw honey. I mix a teaspoon of honey with a little lukewarm water and massage the mixture into my skin and lips. I allow the honey to dry on my face and remove it gently with water after a few minutes, without rubbing my face. The enzymes in honey help exfoliate dead skin cells and leave my skin nice and smooth. Honey is a luxury that can be used on the entire body. Give it a try.

Moisturizing - You may discover that your favorite moisturizer isn't enough to keep your skin hydrated during the winter. Use a nutrient-rich serum under your moisturizer to lock in moisture. Many women swear that there is nothing better than virgin coconut oil. It can be applied in the morning and at night, indoors and out. If you have never used coconut oil on your face, you may experience initial problems and breakouts as the skin adjusts itself to the fat content in coconut oil. Coconut oil can be applied on the entire body and can also be used to moisturize damaged and dehydrated hair. Give it a try.

Extra Care - At least twice a week, apply rich, nourishing mask to your face. Choose certified organic products to minimize the risk of allergy or irritation. Leave the mask on your face for 15-20 minutes and relax. Follow the products instructions to remove it. Also, visit a beauty salon at least once a month to get a facial. A certified beautician may help you identify problems and take care of skin that is damaged by cold and wind. She or he can help you choose beauty products that are right for your skin during the cold season.

Our faces are directly exposed to the elements during the winter, but they are not the only ones that "suffer" during the winter. Remember to take good care of your entire body. Exfoliate and moisturize!

Take extra care of your feet. Even if it does not look like that, the next summer is coming sooner than you think. Wear warm, comfortable shoes and apply foot cream to keep your feet moisturized.

Take care of your hands! Wear warm gloves and use nourishing hand cream. Also, keep the nail cuticles moisturized and your nails well groomed.

Do not forget your hair! Nourish your scalp and moisturize the hair follicles during the winter months.

Always protect your lips! Wear protective lip balm to prevent dryness and chapping.

To prevent dehydration, moisturize from inside out. Drink enough water to stay hydrated. Also, do not overheat your home. Use air humidifier to improve the quality of air you are breathing in.

Remember to nourish your skin from inside out. Chose foods rich in vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and Omega-3 fatty acids. You are what you eat and what you eat shows up in your complexion. Take nutritional supplements to support your body during the winter.

And last, but not least, exercise to get your blood circulation moving and spend some quality times outdoors if the weather permits.

"Did you know that the 3rd or 4th largest cause of death in the US &

virtually kept blind to it. In fact, you are desensitized to it... its
normal... because you hear about it at the end of commercials all day
long... " - Melanie Milletics

Death by medicine - conventional or alternative, may not always be easy to prove. The autopsy is a way to determine the cause of death, but may not tell us whether the patient would have lived a little longer, or die a little healthier if a particular treatment wasn't administered.

I am not a doctor and would never assume that I know all the answers. A human being is more than just a sum of his or her organs. Holistic view of a patient is not necessarily encouraged in conventional medical schools, neither is the importance of nutrition. A body is often understood as a machine that needs repairs.

Statistics are not very flattering to the medical profession. Too many patients die from unnecessary procedures, adverse drug reactions, medical errors, or as a result of surgery and hospitalization.

<span data-ft="{"tn":"K"}">If
you are lucky to realize early enough that the treatment will eventually kill you, you might be able to save yourself. Unfortunately,
most people trust their doctors and are extremely ignorant about their
bodies and the origin of their disease.

<span data-ft="{"tn":"K"}">Wrong diagnose, diagnose for profit, wrong treatment, and overmedication are incredibly
prevalent. Hippocratic oath does not prevent many doctors from seeing their
profession as a money making business. Who can blame them?

<span data-ft="{"tn":"K"}">Healthy, or relatively healthy
patients who need little medication or none at all, are very bad for
business. But once a symptom is "decoded," a patient may become a gold mine. This is true in countries like the United States, where healthcare system still has to undergo necessary reforms; this is true in countries like Austria or Germany that are proud of their socialized medicine.

<span data-ft="{"tn":"K"}">Have you ever met a person who started his or her medical odyssey with one prescription drug, but ended up taking five, six, nine, or more prescription drugs and seems to be doing worse than ever before?

<span data-ft="{"tn":"K"}">I know of many such cases and might have become one myself. Three years ago a company I enjoyed working for more than twenty five years, implemented a major change in my job description. My whole life changed overnight. The stress, anger, and disappointment were the cause of extremely elevated blood pressure. My blood pressure went from low to pathologically high. The chance of a heart attack or stroke in an otherwise healthy person did not seem like something I wanted to even consider, but things were turning from bad to worse and I had to visit a doctor. I received a sample pack of a blood-pressure reducing drug. After a week my blood pressure went down a bit - clear sign that the drug was working.

<span data-ft="{"tn":"K"}">As much as I hate drugs, I agreed to take it till I felt better. I got my prescription and started taking the drug. It was not the same drug that I tried before, but a generic one. My doctor assured me that the drug was harmless and just as effective, and that he himself was taking it and had no problems with blood pressure whatsoever. Wouldn't you trust your doctor in such case?

<span data-ft="{"tn":"K"}">

<span data-ft="{"tn":"K"}">I put my skepticism on the shelf and started the medication. No more than one week later I developed horrible joint and muscle pain, as well as a rush all over my body. I could not walk, sit or lie down without pain. This happened so fast I could not believe my very eyes. Naturally, I went back to see my doctor. He refused to see my symptoms as a result of the medication he prescribed and suggested another drug for the pain I now suffered from. I did some research online and found out that the suggested drug would have possibly damaged my liver, but I would be spared the heart attack or stroke if I agreed to taking two drugs together. Oh, I also would have had to see a dermatologist to take care of the rush on my skin...

<span data-ft="{"tn":"K"}">As far as I was concerned, this was it! I stopped the medication altogether, quit my job, and went on vacation. Within a few weeks only everything turned back to normal. I now know that if I did not do what I did, today I might have been on three, four or more drugs, one treating the negative side effects of the other.

<span data-ft="{"tn":"K"}">I have a neighbor who wasn't strong enough to say no to a doctor and is now, a few years into her treatment, unable to take care of herself and is using a walker if she walks at all. She trusted her doctor and accepted her rapid degeneration as a natural consequence of aging.

<span data-ft="{"tn":"K"}">Another of my neighbors has an even more terrible story to tell. She underwent surgery for her stomach ulcer. After initial improvement she developed pain and her left side of the body, where the surgery was performed, swelled up enormously. Her doctor "diagnosed" a tumor, suggested biopsy and a possible cancer treatment. Horrified of cancer, the poor woman changed her lifestyle and nutrition, but as the pain and swelling grew, she had a feeling, an inkling, that there was some "thing" in her body that was causing this. After more than a year of suffering and countless visits to different doctors, including the surgeon who performed the ulcer surgery, only one doctor agreed to take her seriously. To everybody's horror they found out that the woman wasn't a hypochondriac. The enormous, tumor-like swelling was caused by a small surgical clamp that was left in her body by mistake or neglect during the ulcer surgery.

<span data-ft="{"tn":"K"}">When I hear stories like that, I get very angry. The trust we put in people who are supposed to save our lives blinds us so completely that we are unable to think clearly.

<span data-ft="{"tn":"K"}">Just imagine, how many lives could be saved if people changed the way the eat. How many lives could be saved if people changed their lifestyles and understood their bodies a bit better?

<span data-ft="{"tn":"K"}">Disease prevention is still largely a domain of alternative medicine. Nutrition, stress control, detoxification, fitness programs are often suggested by naturopathic doctors. In many cases such solutions work, but for some patients it may be too late for treatment of any kind. My thoughts go to a dog park acquaintance who was "eaten up" by cancer because she refused any treatment whatsoever. This happens sometimes when religion interferes with the will to survive. A visit to a doctor when she first noticed a growth in her breast might have saved her life.

<span data-ft="{"tn":"K"}">The whole subject is very difficult and often, emotionally loaded. I have no intention to denigrate the entire medical profession, but something definitely is not right. When we look at the history of medicine, we are often shocked at the barbarity of medical treatments and therapies that were common only a hundred years ago. Will the people of the future cringe at our cancer treatments or surgical procedures that seem so advanced to us?

<span data-ft="{"tn":"K"}">Technological progress and growing knowledge open way to new therapies. Many more lives will be saved in the future, but unless we change the way we live, eat, and relax, there will be many more sick people. Chronic disease develops over many years, yet you can prevent it and, to some degree, even reverse the symptoms when you change your entire lifestyle. Ignorance probably kills more people than the medical profession ever will.

Recent food scandals, disclosures, health food obsession, and curiosity, have brought many horror stories to light. It seems than not a week goes by without a new shocking story. Food sold in supermarkets as natural and healthy often is neither natural nor healthy, and the law seems to protect the food industry but not the hapless consumer, unless, of course, you are an organic farmer and have the burden to prove that your organic heirloom carrot will not kill anybody.

Obesity, cancer, diabetes, heart disease, autoimmune diseases, neurological disorders, food allergies, eating disorders, malnutrition, congenital disorders, to name only a few, are on the rise thanks to foods that have no true nutritional value, but pretend to be healthy, natural, and good for you.

I am not even venturing here into the vast subject of organic, conventional, or GMO foods, but unless you grow, raise, forage, and produce your own food, you cannot always be sure what's on your plate.

Inventiveness, progress, and greed are the culprits responsible for the miserable state of affairs. Everybody knows the "ersatz" foods like margarine and saccharine that were invented in times of extreme duress to provide people with substitutes for the most wanted daily staples like butter and sugar. Such fake foods might seem like a necessity during a time of war, but lose their attractiveness in time of peace and abundance, unless... Unless, of course, they are sold as good and even superior to the real stuff: butter will kill you, but margarine is so much better for you; sugar has calories, but saccharine, aspartame & Co are calorie free and even help you to stay skinny or lose weight you put on during holidays. And so on.

The success of science and the rise of chemical industry cannot be underestimated. Much money goes into research, but the profits are exorbitant. Many consumers are willing to accept a wide range of artificial flavors and coloring, often without questioning.

So why the fuss? Well, if it tastes like strawberry, it isn't necessarily a strawberry that you are tasting. A typical strawberry flavoring contains chemicals that have absolutely nothing to do with strawberries:

amyl acetate,

vanillin, and last, but not least,

solvent.

Is this all right with you? Wouldn't it be easier to simply use strawberries to flavor a cake or a milkshake, or any product for that matter? No, because strawberries are perishable and expensive, and not flavorful enough in tiny doses. Chemicals, on the other hand, can be standardized and measured out exactly to produce a constant flavor that sells well and lasts till the expiry date of a product, say, three or five years later.

The same goes for the vanilla, caramel, or chocolate flavorings, and everything else that is manufactured and sold as food.

How about artificial crab meat so popular with sushi lovers? How about gel-injected shrimp from Asia? How about chicken that is only 51% meat? How about vegan sausage? How about sausage?! How about fake apple juice? How about fake honey? Scandal after scandal, disclosures revealed criminal practices. For some people such revelations come too late, others may still reconsider the way they eat and shop for food.

Some of the food industry practices are criminal and must be prosecuted, but many of the secrets are perfectly legal. They are scandalous only because of the dubious ingredients like wood or human hair used to manufacture products sold as food.

The food industry can really be proud of its achievements: food preservatives, flavor enhancers, emulsifiers, coloring, bleaches, and other additives that make a bunch of chemicals look and taste like food. That many people get sick or addicted to certain food products has to be proven first. The industry is very strong and has powerful lawyers. Much money goes into research. Much money goes into lobbying. Much money goes into advertisement. Some money probably goes into lawsuits and to hush the plaintiffs.

Ignorance kills, but how can you blame the overwhelmed consumer when the whole industry promotes unhealthy food products that are definitely not good for you, as something you must eat daily in order to look sexy, healthy, beautiful, and fit?

Education is important, but habits die hard. For as long as a truly organic apple is more expensive than a fake chocolate, sugar loaded bar, the situation will remain unchanged.

Most people on raw food are familiar with wheatgrass. Most green superfood supplements contain some percentage of it, and many juice bars offer freshly pressed wheatgrass juice.

What is wheatgrass?

Wheatgrass is the young green grass that grows from germinated seeds of the common wheat plant or Triticum aestivum. The plant grows in the temperate regions of the United States and Europe where the ripe berries are harvested and usually turned into flour. Wheatgrass, however, is harvested long before the plant riches its maturity.

Wheatgrass consumption was initiated by the famous holistic health practitioner, Ann Wigmore. She observed dogs and cats eating grass to improve their digestion and believed that humans could also benefit from the practice. And the easiest way to introduce wheatgrass to human diet was to juice it.

Ann Wigmore developed a strict health regime for patients with chronic or incurable diseases. The patients were to avoid meat and diary products. They were put on raw, living food diet and had to drink fresh wheatgrass juice. This diet produced incredible results. Patients with cancer, gout and diabetes got healed. Many skin disorders and immune system related problems disappeared as patients indulged in the nutrition-rich foods. Great part of the success was attributed to the detoxifying and alkalizing effect of the wheatgrass juice.

Nutrition facts

Wheatgrass is rich in chlorophyll and SOD (Superoxid dismutase) enzyme. It is a natural source of various minerals and vitamins, including iron, calcium, magnesium, manganese, and selenium, and vitamins A, C, E, K, and B vitamins including B12. Wheatgrass is a perfect source of protein. It provides all essential amino acids. Moreover, the protein comes in the form of polypeptides which are easily utilized by the body.

Wheatgrass is gluten-free and can be safely consumed by people with gluten allergy and gluten sensitivity. The type of gluten that causes adverse reactions exists only in the wheat grains which are seeds that produce the grass.

Health benefits of wheatgrass

As mentioned before, wheatgrass is believed to have many health benefits:

It has the capacity to detoxify blood and liver. It helps neutralize environmental toxins and pollutants. Thanks to SOD it helps to remove heavy metals and radiation form the body;

It helps alkalize the body and relieve such ailments as peptic ulcers and ulcerative colitis;

Thanks to a high chlorophyll content, it helps to cleanse and oxygenate the blood and increase the red blood cell count;

It helps to clear the brain fog;

It helps improve digestion and relieve constipation, diarrhea, bloating, bad breath and body odor;

It stimulates the thyroid function and may help to manage weight problems;

It can help reduce inflammation in the body and alleviate such ailments as rheumatoid arthritis when used topically as a compress;

It helps improve many skin conditions thanks to its detoxifying and alkalizing function and the effect it has on digestion;

When consumed fresh in form of juice, it may increase bio-electricity and awaken inner life-force. It helps to increase vibrancy and activates self-healing mechanisms within the body.

Grow your own!

If you are living in a big city, you probably have no problems finding a juice bar that serves freshly made wheatgrass juice, but wheatgrass is not as easily accessible in smaller communities. In this case the best thing you can do is to grow your own.

By growing your own wheatgrass you will be in control of its quality and purity. By choosing organic seeds and purified water you can make sure that the wheatgrass you are consuming truly is organic and pollutant-free. You also determine the conditions for growth and the moment of harvest.

Should you decide to grow your own wheatgrass, remember not to expose it to a direct sunlight or it will taste bitter. Also make sure that it does not develop a mold. For best results grow it in specially developed trays and follow the instructions of the manufacturer.

Best time to harvest your wheatgrass for juicing is about one week after germination of the seeds, short before the so called jointing stage. In the life of a cereal plant such as wheat, jointing stage is a moment of growth at which the internodal tissue in the grass leaf begins to elongate and form a stem. By harvesting your wheatgrass at this stage of growth you make sure that your juice will have the highest concentration of nutrients. Once harvested, you can leave the cropped grass in the tray and allow to grow again. With a little practice you will be able to grow your own healthy grass.

Juicing wheatgrass

Juicing wheatgrass is very easy if you have the right tool. Juicers such as the Champion juicer have additional attachments specially developed for juicing grass. There are also juicers on the market that were designed only for juicing grasses and leafy greens. Some of them are electric, some are manual. The price varies depending of the type of juicer. If you decide to buy one, always buy the best you can afford, but make sure it is easy to clean.

A word of caution

Wheatgrass is a powerful detoxifying superfood. Depending on your health condition it may cause so called Herxheimer reaction if consumed in large amounts. This reaction occurs when more toxins are released into the bloodstream that the body can process. Symptoms may include headache, skin rush and even a light fever. To prevent this you should start your detox gradually and always drink a lot of water to support the elimination of toxins from the body.

Aloe vera - leaf and jelly

"Of all the herbs I've ever studied - and I've written thousands of
articles on nutrition and disease prevention - aloe vera is the most
impressive herb of them all." - Mike Adams

Aloe vera is a succulent household plant from a lily family. It has been used in herbal medicine thousands of years. Earliest records date back to Sumeria and Ancient Egypt. It is believed that Cleopatra used aloe vera in her legendary beauty regimen.

The plant is native to the African continent and has been widely cultivated throughout the world. It grows in the Arabian Peninsula; Eastern Africa, including Sudan; Western Africa, including Nigeria; throughout North Africa, including Egypt, Morocco, and Mauritania; Southern Spain and the Canary Islands, Madeira and Cape Verde; China, Mexico, United States, notably New Mexico, Texas, Arizona, and Florida; Australia and Barbados, to name the most important regions. The leaves are harvested to obtain the inner jelly-like section for health and beauty purposes.

Traditionally, Aloe vera plant has been used to cure many ailments and diseases, including constipation, fungal infections and candida, skin disorders, and even cancer. There are more than 700 scientific and clinical studies documenting efficacy of this plant. Both, Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and Ayurveda, use Aloe vera in their preparations.

Aloe vera contains more than 200 biologically active compounds such as amino acids; polysaccharides; antioxidants; vitamins such as the B vitamins, including B12, vitamin C, beta-carotene, choline, and folic acid; minerals including calcium, magnesium, phosphorus, zinc, chromium, copper and manganese; unsaturated fatty acids and enzymes. All the compounds act in synergy to provide unique healing effect.

Aloe vera jelly can be applied to injured, inflamed, infected, burnt or dehydrated skin. it is anti-sceptic, anti-bacterial, anti-fungal, and anti-viral. It moisturizes and disinfects, and helps reconstruct damaged skin.

The precious jelly, however, can do so much more. You can use it for:

detox - the jelly helps clear and expel toxins form the intestines as well as from the liver;

immune system support - vitamins and polysaccharides, especially the acemannan in Aloe vera, support healthy immune system. Acemannan stimulates the action of the macrophages or the defense cells that are responsible for fighting infections within the body;

alkalization - Aloe vera has the same pH as the human skin and can be used to heal the skin, but also internally to normalize the body pH;

to improve digestive health - compounds in Aloe vera help reduce inflammation of the stomach and the intestinal tract, and provide relief from heartburn;

to prevent constipation - skin of the Aloe very leaves contain two laxative substances - aloin and emodin. Preparations containing these substances help improve regularity and prevent constipation;

to balance cholesterol - beta sitosterol in Aloe vera may help balance cholesterol levels in serum and thus promote cardiovascular health;

to regulate blood sugar - compounds in Aloe vera such as lectins, mannans, and anthraquinones help regulate blood glucose levels;

to reduce weight - improved digestion, balanced blood sugar and healthy cholesterol levels together with some additional lifestyle changes, lead to weigh loss. Regular consumption of Aloe vera helps maintain optimal body weight;

to reduce inflammation - Aloe very soothes inflammation inside and out.

There are many high quality, certified organic products on the market. Capsules are made mostly for internal use. Aloe vera juice or gel (jelly) are intended for both, internal and external, use. There are also cosmetic products containing certified organic Aloe vera juice. Such products usually help soothe and improve the health of skin, but are not intended of internal use. Choose wisely.

An Aloe very plant on a windowsill in a kitchen or in the garden is a perfect way to prepare for emergencies such as small burns or sunburn. Remember, however, that Aloe vera plant is toxic to cats and dogs. If you have pets, keep the plant in place where they cannot reach it.

<span style="font-family: "georgia", "times new roman", serif;">If you are new to juicing you might be mesmerized by all the green juice
talk in juice bars, in health magazines and all over the world wide
web. So what is this green juice hype all about?

<span style="font-family: "georgia", "times new roman", serif;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia", "times new roman", serif;">Green juices are probably the best food-based medicine we can give our bodies. They
are particularly beneficial for all these people who:

<span style="font-family: "georgia", "times new roman", serif;">have problems with their digestion

<span style="font-family: "georgia", "times new roman", serif;">whose bodies are highly acidic

<span style="font-family: "georgia", "times new roman", serif;">those who suffer from toxic overload

<span style="font-family: "georgia", "times new roman", serif;">for those who need to lose weight

<span style="font-family: "georgia", "times new roman", serif;">Juices are easily absorbed as the juicing process breaks down
the cell walls of fruits and vegetable making them easier to digest. This means that the nutrients are getting directly
into your system.

<span style="font-family: "georgia", "times new roman", serif;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia", "times new roman", serif;">One
very well known benefit of using green herbs and vegetable in juicing
is the fact that they are rich in chlorophyll. Scientists discovered
that hemoglobin in human blood and chlorophyll in green plants are
almost identical. Just like our hemoglobin chlorophyll contains carbon,
hydrogen, oxygen, and nitrogen. The only chemical difference in the
organic construction of the
chlorophyll in plants and in blood is that the former
contains magnesium while the latter contains iron.

<span style="font-family: "georgia", "times new roman", serif;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia", "times new roman", serif;">A research in Germany demonstrated that chlorophyll helped reduce high blood pressure, eliminated anemia, made
weak men strong, cured digestive troubles, and seemed to be a potion of youth.

<span style="font-family: "georgia", "times new roman", serif;">Once in the digestive system,
chlorophyll immediately enriches the blood.
The red blood cells increase considerably in number while their
haemoglobin content rises. The blood circulation improves and more
nutrients and oxygen are transported to tissues and organs. At the same
time more toxins are neutralized and removed. The blood is enriched and
reinforced with new
life. No wonder, then, that those who consume considerable amounts of
chlorophyll-rich foods are not only reporting recovery from chronic
diseases and ailments, but also more energy, stamina and radiance that
they have not experienced for a long time, if ever at all.

<span style="font-family: "georgia", "times new roman", serif;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia", "times new roman", serif;">Best fruit and vegetable combination for a nutritious alkalizing green juice:

<span style="font-family: "georgia", "times new roman", serif;">cucumber, celery, cilantro

<span style="font-family: "georgia", "times new roman", serif;">lime, celery, cucumber, cilantro

<span style="font-family: "georgia", "times new roman", serif;">cucumber, celery, fennel

<span style="font-family: "georgia", "times new roman", serif;">aloe vera leaves, green apples, lemon balm

<span style="font-family: "georgia", "times new roman", serif;">green apple, celery

<span style="font-family: "georgia", "times new roman", serif;">green apple, pear, cucumber

<span style="font-family: "georgia", "times new roman", serif;">celery, bell pepper, cucumber

<span style="font-family: "georgia", "times new roman", serif;">pear, mint, cucumber

<span style="font-family: "georgia", "times new roman", serif;">cucumber, fennel, celery, green chili pepper, cilantro

<span style="font-family: "georgia", "times new roman", serif;">cucumber, parsley, bell pepper

<span style="font-family: "georgia", "times new roman", serif;">apple, kiwi, cucumber

<span style="font-family: "georgia", "times new roman", serif;">honey dew, celery

<span style="font-family: "georgia", "times new roman", serif;">bell pepper, green chili pepper, cucumber

<span style="font-family: "georgia", "times new roman", serif;">spinach, green apple, cucumber

<span style="font-family: "georgia", "times new roman", serif;">kale, celery, cucumber

<span style="font-family: "georgia", "times new roman", serif;">dill, apple, cucumber

<span style="font-family: "georgia", "times new roman", serif;">orange, kale, cucumber

<span style="font-family: "georgia", "times new roman", serif;">These are only few
suggestions. You can start from here. Experiment with green herbs and
veggies; add limes or lemons. Add ginger. The taste will change when you
change the proportions of your ingredients, but the alkalizing and
detoxifying action will remain unchanged.

<span style="font-family: "georgia", "times new roman", serif;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia", "times new roman", serif;">I
prefer to make pure vegetable juices, but some people love to add a
little sweetness of a fruit. I rather add herbs. And I always add a
pinch of Celtic salt and few drops of virgin olive oil to activate the
bile flow.

<span style="font-family: "georgia", "times new roman", serif;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia", "times new roman", serif;">If you are planning a detox or a weight loss program, early spring is a perfect time to begin. Start slowly and
gradually increase the amount of green, alkalizing foods. Consult your healthcare provider if you have serious health issues.
Gold, frankincense and myrrh are known since antiquity. They have been used
to heal ailments of the body and the mind. All three substances were
considered precious because of their relative scarcity. They were often
used in religious ceremonies, given as gifts, and of course, used as
medicine to cure those who could afford them.

Gold, frankincense and myrrh

All three substances experience an incredible come-back. There is an ongoing research that is quite promising. Unfortunately, most people in the United States are completely unaware of their health benefits and incredible healing potential.

<span style="font-family: "georgia", "times new roman", serif;">~ Gold ~

The earliest records of medicinal use of gold date back to Ancient Egypt where people
ingested gold for mental, spiritual and bodily purification. As far
back as 5,000 years ago Egyptian alchemists used liquid gold to make
healing elixirs. They believed that gold could invigorate and rejuvenate
the body, cure diseases, and help restore perfect health. Ancient
Egyptians were also using gold in dentistry. Archeological finds
document use of gold in dentistry as early as 2,500 B.C.

<span style="font-family: "georgia", "times new roman", serif;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia", "times new roman", serif;">But Ancient
Egyptians were not the only ones who used gold for therapeutic purposes.
Gold was used in the Traditional Chinese Medicine to restore health and
prolong life. To this day peasants in China cook rice with a golden
coin in order to profit from its restorative properties.

<span style="font-family: "georgia", "times new roman", serif;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia", "times new roman", serif;">Gold
was also used therapeutically by the Indian Ayurvedic doctors, by the
ancient Tibetans, by the Maya and the Aztecs, by the Arabs and the
Persians. The Persian doctor Avicenna prescribed it to strengthen the
heart.

<span style="font-family: "georgia", "times new roman", serif;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia", "times new roman", serif;">Medieval
alchemists created Aurum potabile, a gold essence that was used as a
life-giving, rejuvenating, balancing, heal-all potion throughout the
Middle Ages and the Renaissance. The process was very laborious and was
kept secret. Famous doctors such as Paracelsus and Isaacus Hollandus
reported incredibly successful use of Aurum potabile in therapy of many
chronic ailments. Medieval doctors also used gold-coated pills to cure arthritis.

<span style="font-family: "georgia", "times new roman", serif;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia", "times new roman", serif;">Over
the ages gold never lost its popularity, but the 19th century brought
an entirely different form of gold - the colloidal gold that was first
produced in 1857 by British chemist Michael Faraday. Colloidal gold is a
suspension of minuscule gold particles (nano-particles) in a fluid,
commonly distilled water. In the 19th century colloidal gold was used to
improve blood circulation and to cure alcoholism. Today it is often
used to reduce dependency on such substances as alcohol, nicotine,
caffeine and sugar.

<span style="font-family: "georgia", "times new roman", serif;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia", "times new roman", serif;">Colloidal
gold seems to have balancing and harmonizing effect on the human body.
It can be used to restore libido, enhance the immune function, improve
mental focus, and increase overall energy levels.

<span style="font-family: "georgia", "times new roman", serif;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia", "times new roman", serif;">Modern
cosmetic industry re-discovered the use of gold for beauty. There are
records that women in ancient Egypt, China and Rome used gold topically
to prevent premature aging and heal skin conditions. Research shows that
gold has the capacity to prevent depletion of collagen and the
breakdown of elastin, it may help to regenerate healthy skin cells, calm
inflammation, and fight free radicals.

<span style="font-family: "georgia", "times new roman", serif;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia", "times new roman", serif;">Gold is non-toxic. It is well tolerated by the body and does not seem to interfere with other medications.

<span style="font-family: "georgia", "times new roman", serif;">~ Frankincense ~

<span style="font-family: "georgia", "times new roman", serif;">Frankincense, also known as olibanum, is an aromatic resin obtained from the tree of the genus Boswellia in the family Burseraceae. The tree is native to
Oman, Somalia, and Yemen. For ages, the resin was used not only to make
perfumes and incense, but also as medicine.

<span style="font-family: "georgia", "times new roman", serif;">The
use of frankincense dates back to ancient Egypt where it was used in
sacred ceremonies. Ancient Egyptians believed that frankincense could
dispel demons and used the resin for embalming and mummification. They
also mixed the resin with honey and chewed it to cure bad breath.

<span style="font-family: "georgia", "times new roman", serif;">In Arabia and in Ancient China the resin was used to heal skin conditions, running nose, nausea, and even leprosy.

<span style="font-family: "georgia", "times new roman", serif;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia", "times new roman", serif;">Hippocrates
used an ointment made from frankincense that could cure many skin
conditions, burns, wounds and skin infections. The resin was also used
to alleviate digestive problems, expel parasites, cure bronchitis, sore
throat, catarrh, and cough, to mention only a few.

<span style="font-family: "georgia", "times new roman", serif;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia", "times new roman", serif;">In
the Middle Ages, Hildegard of Bingen believed that the scent of
frankincense had the power to stimulate the human brain and improve
memory. Paracelsus also used frankincense to cure variety of ailments.
Both, Hildegard of Bingen and Paracelsus knew about its capacity to cure
skin diseases, respiratory diseases, digestive problems and diarrhea.

<span style="font-family: "georgia", "times new roman", serif;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia", "times new roman", serif;">During
the Middle Ages frankincense was one of the most important remedies
used to cure people. Its popularity as a medicine, however, dwindled at
the end of the Middle Ages and people in Europe forgot about it. They
could still enjoy the scent, though, since frankincense was burned
ceremonially in Catholic churches all over Europe.

<span style="font-family: "georgia", "times new roman", serif;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia", "times new roman", serif;">Frankincense
became popular again in the West in mid-1980s after a German
pharmacologist, prof. Phillip Theodor Ammon of Tübingen, brought it back
from India where it was part of the Indian materia medica.

<span style="font-family: "georgia", "times new roman", serif;">German
researchers have discovered that Indian frankincense (Boswellia
serrata) was a very effective analgesic and worked wonders against
low-level inflammation in the body. There is hope that chronic diseases
and conditions such as Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis, atherosclerosis, asthma,
eczema, rheumatoid arthritis, leaky gut syndrome, and maybe even cancer, could be
successfully treated with frankincense. More research has to be
conducted, but what was published so far is quite promising.

<span style="font-family: "georgia", "times new roman", serif;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia", "times new roman", serif;">~ Myrrh ~

<span style="font-family: "georgia", "times new roman", serif;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia", "times new roman", serif;">Myrrh is the very aromatic resin from small, thorny tree species from the genus Commiphora in the family Burseraceae.
Myrrh is native to eastern regions of Africa (Ethiopia, Somalia and
Sudan), and the Arabian Peninsula, especially Oman and Yemen. Since
antiquity myrrh was used to make perfume and incense, and like
frankincense, it was also used as medicine. Myrrh was highly valued in
Ancient Egypt, Mesopotamia, China, India, Ancient Greece and Rom.
<span style="font-family: "georgia", "times new roman", serif;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia", "times new roman", serif;">Ancient
Egyptians used myrrh in religious ceremonies and funerals. The resin
was used in embalming and mummification, and to heal wounds.
<span style="font-family: "georgia", "times new roman", serif;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia", "times new roman", serif;">In
Ancient Greece, Hippocrates used myrrh to heal ulcers and wounds. The
Romans believed that the scent of myrrh was an aphrodisiac. Roman ladies
wore myrrh perfume to attract lovers.
<span style="font-family: "georgia", "times new roman", serif;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia", "times new roman", serif;">Myrrh
became popular in Ancient China in the 7th century. It was used to heal
wounds, to improve blood circulation, treat uterine tumors and other
female health problems.
<span style="font-family: "georgia", "times new roman", serif;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia", "times new roman", serif;">During
the pestilence pandemics in Medieval Europe doctors gave patients decay
preventing pills made of myrrh, saffron and aloe. The Arabs used myrrh
to cure contagious diseases.
<span style="font-family: "georgia", "times new roman", serif;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia", "times new roman", serif;">In
Europe myrrh was used to disinfect wounds, reduce pain, and prevent
inflammation. It was a popular remedy that could cure cough, bad breath,
headaches, digestive problems, jaundice, gout, syphilis and even
leprosy.
<span style="font-family: "georgia", "times new roman", serif;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia", "times new roman", serif;">Due to the scientific progress of the 19th century and the emergence of modern chemistry and medicine, myrrh became obsolete.
<span style="font-family: "georgia", "times new roman", serif;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia", "times new roman", serif;">Thanks
to a growing interest in plant-based medicine during the last few
decades, however, we have witnessed a comeback of this ancient remedy.
Thanks to its antiseptic and anti-inflammatory properties, myrrh is
often added to mouthwashes and toothpaste. It is used to disinfect
wounds and to reduce inflammation in the mouth, but also to treat
asthma, reduce pain, balance blood sugar, balance cholesterol levels,
stimulate the immune system, treat systemic candida and fungal
infections, improve digestion, and to heal inflammatory diseases of the
digestive tract. There is even hope for cancer patients. An ongoing
research is being conducted in many parts of the world.
<span style="font-family: "georgia", "times new roman", serif;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia", "times new roman", serif;">Both,
frankincense and myrrh, are used in Traditional Chinese Medicine and in
Ayurveda. For centuries these resins have been used in China and in
India. They are an important part of many herbal preparations that are
used to treat wide variety of ailments and diseases.
<span style="font-family: "georgia", "times new roman", serif;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia", "times new roman", serif;">Essential
oils of frankincense and myrrh are used to make costly perfumes. They
are also used in aromatherapy, but that, by itself, is a vast subject
deserving an entirely new article.
Not This Year!

Stress is probably one of the most underestimated holiday
"companions" we may ever encounter. While the Holiday Season is meant to
be a time of love, warmth and cheerfulness, it usually turns out to be
the most stressful time of the year. And although we celebrate every
year, the Holiday Season seems to always take us by surprise year after
year<span style="font-family: "georgia", "times new roman", serif;">.

<span style="font-family: "georgia", "times new roman", serif;">

Not This Year!" width="449" />

Since holiday stress is predictable and avoidable, why, after
all the preparations are finished and the first dinner guests appear at
the door, some of us feel little joy and are about to collapse from
plain exhaustion?

What is stress?

Stress
is the body's natural response to intense situations that require some
kind of action on the part of the individual. Some stress is considered
to be good. Experts say that it can actually improve our immune system.
Bad stress, however, weakens the body's immune response and may cause a
range of health problems such as sleep disorder, weight gain, heart
problems, impaired digestion. An untreated, prolonged or chronic stress
may even have deadly consequences.

<div data-mce-style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif; text-align: left;" style="font-family: georgia, "times new roman", serif; text-align: justify;">

<div data-mce-style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif; text-align: left;" style="font-family: georgia, "times new roman", serif; text-align: justify;">
Is there anything that we can do to avoid stress before the Holidays?

<div data-mce-style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif; text-align: left;" style="font-family: georgia, "times new roman", serif; text-align: justify;">
Keeping
an eye on your budget, mailing Christmas cards and buying gifts early,
buying online, preparing a Christmas dinner menu in advance, hiring
catering service, delegating tasks to family members, etc., are some of
the strategies worth embracing if we want to avoid unnecessary stress.
But even if we do, we may still worry that the gifts might not be
delivered on time or that someone forgets what we asked them to do.

The
very fact that we still have to oversee all the preparations of the
festive dinner makes the "delegating business" just as stressful as
doing everything oneself. No matter what we do, stress and anxiety seem
unavoidable as there always is a chance that things will go wrong. The
vision of impending catastrophe is almost comical and yet, not funny at
all.

So,
if the Holiday stress seems unavoidable, why not give yourself a gift
of relaxation? Schedule an early afternoon visit to a spa and pamper
yourself. Take a bath after a long day of Christmas shopping. Light some
scented candles and listen to a quiet, relaxing music. Have a cup of
hot chocolate or some calming herbal infusion. Go to bed early. Relax
and don't let the stress ruin your Holidays.

We function much better when we are relaxed. Our memory improves and we are in a much better mood.

Plan
ahead, but remember that things do not have to be perfect. Holidays are
about joy and not about perfection. Maybe it is time to simplify the
way you celebrate Holidays and enjoy it more instead.

<div data-mce-style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif; text-align: left;" style="font-family: georgia, "times new roman", serif; text-align: left;">

~ Merry Christmas ~

What Is Coconut Oil?

Coconut oil is an edible oil that has been extracted from the flesh of mature fruits of the coconut palm or the Cocos nucifera.

Coconut oil has been used for thousands of years by cultures living in the tropics. People of these cultures traditionally demonstrated incredible levels of good health and fitness, particularly if they followed their traditional diet that was normally rich in tropical fruits and coconut oil. Their health often deteriorated when they started adding unhealthy Western foods to their diet.

Understanding Fats

There is a widely spread misconception about fat. The idea that fat, especially the saturated fat, was bad for you originated in the 1960s-70s. There was a faulty research that pointed out that fat was the main culprit in the heart disease. This idea gave birth to low-fat diet and a marketing craze of low-fat, no-fat "food" products. In 1977 low-fat diet was recommended to the American society by the Dietary Guidelines for Americans Committee. This recommendation caused more harm than good. There was not only no decrease in heart disease, Americans were getting sicker and fatter than ever before. Only recently, after evaluation of the empirical data "powers-to-be" came to realization that we need fat in our diet and that saturated fat is not necessarily evil.

We need fats in our diet! Fats helps us absorb the fat soluble vitamins A, D, E and K. Fats are necessary for the proper neurological function and other processes within the body. They provide insulation to our body and the internal organs and are stored as a valuable energy reserve. So, instead of vilifying fat, we should eat the right fats.

Fats are composed of carbon, hydrogen and oxygen. (Some phospholipids may also contain nitrogen and phosphorus atoms.) The number of hydrogen molecules is what determines saturation of fats. When each carbon atom has its maximum number of hydrogen atoms attached to it, we call that fat a saturated fat. In other words, a saturated fat is a fat that is filled to its capacity with hydrogen atoms. Saturated fats are usually of animal origin - like lard and butter. They are solid and rather unstable at room temperature.

Plant-derived fats are unsaturated fats. They are either monounsaturated - like the oleic fatty acid in olive oil; or polyunsaturated - like linoleic fatty acid found in corn, soybean, peanut, cottonseed or safflower oil.

Although plant-derived, coconut oil belongs to the group of saturated fats. It is a source of medium- and short-chain fatty acids. It does not oxidize when exposed to oxygen; it liquefies in room temperature; it has a high burning point.

Natural coconut oil consists of more than 90% saturated fat, but it also contains some unsaturated fat that includes mono- and polyunsaturated fatty acids:

Most saturated fatty acids in coconut oil are medium chain triglycerides: lauric acid, capric acid, myristic acid and palmitic acid.

Linoleic acid (a polyunsaturated fatty acid)

Oleic acid (a monounsaturated fatty acid)

Plyphenols such as phenolic acid which is responsible for the aroma and taste of the coconut oil.

Coconut oil also contains vitamins E and K, choline and iron.

The biochemistry of fats is rather complicated, but not very difficult to understand. If you are interested in biochemistry and want to learn more about fats, please click here.

Health Benefits of Coconut Oil

The most recent research confirms what was known for ages: Coconut oil is good for you! The many health benefits include:

Mental health and cognition - Research shows that medium chain triglycerides (MCTs) found in coconut oil can significantly improve cognitive function in humans and animals. Studies demonstrated that both, people and aging dogs consuming MCTs performed better on cognitive tests that those who did not. Moreover, MCTs produce ketones which are used by the body as an insulin-independent energy source. The most recent research suggests that Alzheimer's patients may not be unable to properly utilize insulin in their brains. The brain needs insulin in order to use glucose, but when brain cells lack glucose, they die. This may lead to brain damage and neurological diseases such as Alzheimer's. Since ketones deliver energy necessary to support healthy function and structure of brain cells they may play important role in treatment and prevention of Alzheimer's disease. More research needs to be conducted, but there is hope for those who suffer from this incurable disease.

Digestion - Coconut oil may help improve digestion and digestive disorders. The medium chain fatty acids (MCFAs) in coconut oil are easier to digest that the long chain fatty acids in other oils. This means that the digestion of coconut oil puts less strain on liver and pancreas since the digestion of MCFAs does not require bile or pancreatic enzymes. Coconut oil can help alleviate symptoms of Crohn's disease, pancreatitis, ulcerative colitis and stomach ulcers. It speeds digestion and can prevent constipation. Coconut oil also has the unique ability to kill or expel parasites of the digestive tract including worms such as tapeworms and protozoa such as girardia. Coconut oil also helps keep H. pylori bacteria in check.

Weight loss - Coconut oil can help you lose weight. It works on many levels: it helps improve digestion and heal the digestive tract, prevent constipation, increase metabolic rate, prevent food cravings, and improve the thyroid function.

Heart health - For many researchers coconut oil is quite puzzling as far as heart health is concerned. Coconut oil contains both, heart-friendly myristic fatty acid and the lauric fatty acid that is generally considered to be detrimental to cardiovascular health. However, the combination of these fatty acids in coconut oil tends to improve the cholesterol profile since it increases the HDL (good cholesterol) thus improving the HDL/LDL (good versus bad cholesterol) ratio in blood. The HDL/LDL ratio is regarded as an accurate indicator of the heart disease.

Immune system - Anti-microbial properties of coconut oil have been well known for centuries to people living in tropical cultures. Research confirms that coconut oil has the ability to improve immune function. Among others, coconut oil contains lauric acid which is converted by the body to monolaurin. Monolaurin is a natural component in breast milk. research shows that monolaurin has the capacity to kill yeast, viruses and gram positive bacteria such as Streptococcus, Staphylococcus or Listeria.

Candida - Capric acid, caprilic acid, caproic acid, lauric acid and myristic acid - fatty acids present in coconut oil are very useful in healing and preventing candida. They are well known for their antimicrobial, antiviral and anti-fungal properties. Regular use of coconut oil helps not only heal systemic candidiasis, but also to prevent recurrent infection.

Dental care - Coconut oil is often used to prevent tooth decay. Applied topically, coconut oil heals swollen and inflamed gums. Many people use coconut oil instead of toothpaste, others perform a simple daily ritual known as oil pulling wherein a spoonful of coconut oil is swished between the teeth for 15 minutes or so. Coconut oil with its anti-microbial properties acts as a unique mouth cleanser. It not only removes bacteria and plaque, it brightens the teeth, heals oral infections and prevents bad breath.

Vision - A study conducted by Vallikannan Baskaran, from the Central Food Technological Research Institute in India, demonstrated that consumption of coconut oil promotes the bio-availability of lutein which is necessary for maintaining eye health in aging adults.

Skin health - Coconut oil helps to heal skin infections, allergic dermatitis, eczema, psoriasis, sunburn and wounds. Its antibacterial properties make it a perfect ointment for infected wounds. It stops infections of the wound and the putrefaction of adjacent skin tissues.

Skincare - Coconut oil is a wonderful moisturizer and emollient. It may help to reduce wrinkles and rejuvenate the skin. Since the virgin coconut oil is free from any additives, it is a perfect solution for delicate or sensitive skin.

Haircare - Coconut oil is a wonderful conditioner for hair and scalp. Traditionally it has been used to ensure a healthy hair growth and to prevent scalp infections and dandruff.

Buying Coconut Oil

Buying coconut oil might not be as easy as it seems. The recent coconut oil "craze" brought tons of coconut oil on the market. There is not a single supermarket or a health food store that would not carry coconut oil today. But like with everything, not all products are created equal and there is a difference not only in price, but also in the quality. Remember to always buy certified organic, cold pressed, hexane-free product.

Sugar consumption is on the rise all over the world. This fact has horrendous implications since the metabolic syndrome, obesity, Type 2 diabetes in adults, and alarmingly early onset of Type 2 diabetes in children, are only few consequences of sugar consumption.

Scientists have demonstrated that refined sugar is a highly addictive substance. One study found that the extremely sweet taste can surpass the cocaine reward even in people who are addicted to heavy drugs. In another study scientists demonstrated that quitting sugar can be as difficult for some people as quitting nicotine or alcohol.

Are you addicted to sugar?

Addicts seldom admit that they have a problem and often find justification for their behavior.

Do you always eat dessert?

Do you always have to have something sweet in your house?

Do you make excuses to take just one more piece of that delicious cake?

Do you struggle to say no when you are offered something sweet?

Do you have sugar "attacks" where you feel you must have something sweet or you will not make it?

If you eat sweets on regular basis try to give them up for a day or two and see what happens. If you develop headaches and mood swings the chances are that you are addicted.

A few years ago one of my favorite nutritionists, Patrick Holford, devised clever nutritional strategies for people who wished to quit their addictions.

Quitting any kind of addiction is not an easy process. The withdrawal symptoms are often unbearable and can make it difficult for anyone to give up the stuff he or she is addicted to - be it nicotine, alcohol, caffeine, heavy drugs or even sugar. While drugs or alcohol are considered harmful to our health, sugar addiction is often trivialized, neglected or not even recognized as such. Worse, many people do not even know that sugar is harmful to health. Many do not know that they are addicted.

What is sugar?

Sugar is the generalized term used for sweet, short-chain, soluble
carbohydrates, many of which are used in food to sweeten and improve the taste. They are composed of carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen. Together with starches and fiber, sugars belong to the class of carbohydrates that are necessary to provide energy and regulate protein and fat metabolism, among others.

All sugars are either monosaccharides (simple sugars) or disaccharides. Simple sugars are easily and quickly digested and utilized by the human body, but there is a difference in the way liver processes glucose and fructose. (This is a vast subject that requires another article.) Disaccharides such as sucrose or the common white table sugar, on the other hand, require enzymes in order to be converted into simple sugars that are then utilized by the body.

Sucrose, which is composed of the monosaccharides fructose and glucose, is found in sugar beets, sugar cane, sorghum, maple syrup, molasses, and pineapple. It is composed of one molecule of fructose and one molecule of glucose and can be metabolized in a healthy body.

Sucrose is used extensively to sweeten food and beverages, but even people who do not add sugar to their diet may be consuming large amounts of so called "hidden" sugar that is added by the food industry into ever growing amount of foods. Salad dressings, mayonnaise, ketchup, peanut butter, baby formula, bread, sausage, luncheon meat, etc. all have sugar added to them.

Addiction to sugar begins very early in life and is constantly reinforced by millions of dollars spent on advertising all over the world by the food industry. Average person living in America consumes more than one hundred fifty pound of sugar per year! It is estimated that only thirty pounds come from sugar that people are consciously adding to their food. The remaining amount comes from industrially produced foods and drinks.

Why should you quit sugar:

Sugar can make you fat! Sweets and foods with added sugar deliver incredible amount of empty calories and no fiber or nutrients to keep you nourished and satiated. As soon as you had your sweet fix you normally crave for more. You not only eat more calories than you can burn, but sugar promotes belly fat that once there is probably the most difficult to lose.

Excess sugar consumption has the same toxic effect on liver as does alcohol. In fact, increased sugar consumption had the same detrimental effect on health as the consumption of alcohol and could be responsible for hypertension, myocardial infarction, insulin resistance, obesity, malnutrition, liver disease, and pancreatitis.

Sugar suppresses the release of the human growth hormone or HGH. Consumption of sugar, especially within two hours after workout, causes hypothalamus to release the inhibitory hormone somatostatin. Somatostatin from the hypothalamus inhibits the pituitary gland’s secretion of the HGH and the thyroid stimulating hormone.

Sugar disrupts the immune system. In the 1970s the Noble Prize winner Dr. Linus Pauling discovered that the vitamin C increases the body's ability to fight infections. He also found that sugar inhibits this ability. In order to be able to fight bacteria and viruses, our white blood
cells must accumulate vitamin C at the 50-fold
concentration all the time. Vitamin C is constantly being moved through the cell membranes
into the white blood cells all over your body. Dr. Pauling discovered that glucose, which has similar chemical structure as the vitamin C, can replace vitamin C concentration in the white cells. In fact, when blood sugar rises to 120 after a consumption of cakes, candies or sodas, the ability of white cells to fight infections decreases by about 75%! Moreover, it can take up to six hours to restore optimal levels of vitamin C in the white blood after consumption of sugar.

Sugar can increase risk of cancer. Researchers have found that sugar in the intestine triggers the formation of a hormone called GIP. GIP is controlled by a protein called β-catenin that
depends entirely on sugar levels in the body. This in turn, increases insulin released by
the pancreas. Researchers found that there is a strong correlation between β-catenin and the cell's susceptibility to cancer formation. Moreover, research also shows that high sugar consumption lowers the survival chance of breast cancer and colon cancer patients.

Sugar can damage your heart and shorten your life. In 2013 the Journal of American Heart Association has published a study confirming that sugar affects pumping mechanism of the heart and can potentially increase the risk of heart failure. Researchers found that a glucose metabolite called glucose
6-phosphate (G6P) that is derived from
sugar and from starch was responsible for the changes in the muscle
protein of the heart. These changes could eventually lead to heart
failure.

Sugar contributes to premature aging. When sugar enters your system it has the tendency to bind to fats and protein molecules in your body. This process is know as glycation. It results in the production of advanced glycation end products known as AGEs. These molecules cause damage to connective tissues and are responsible for chronic inflammation. But AGEs are not only responsible for processes that are "hidden" deep inside our bodies. They also are the cause or visible aging. Collagen and elastin are the proteins in skin that are responsible for the health and youthful appearance. These proteins are also most susceptible to the glycation process.

It is probably much easier to enumerate reasons for quitting sugar than to quit this sweet addiction. Like many people I have a very sweet tooth and cannot imagine a festive dinner menu without dessert, but I also know too well that sugar is not good for me. It is enough for me to look into a mirror the next day after I satisfied my sugar cravings the night before. The skin looks inflamed and the joints feel stiff. I know that if I continued eating sweets for another day or two things would get even worse. So I quit for a week or two only to get tempted again.

Young people can recover from the sugar binge much faster and may not even gain weight, but with age the damage done by sugar becomes more obvious and almost irreversible. So, how do we quit sugar cravings?

Sugar craving exist on two levels:

physiological, where it manifests itself as an addiction to sugar, the chemical substance that affect entire body chemistry

emotional, where it manifests itself either as craving for comfort and happiness, or as a reward for a particular type of behavior.

To successfully quit sugar we must understand and address both, the physiological and the emotional dependence on sugar.

If you are addicted to sugar you must understand that there is no one-fits-all solution to addiction. Every human being is unique and will power and self-motivation are not always enough. However, everyone can implement a few simple steps that would gradually re-set the addicted brain and re-program body chemistry.

The Break-Sugar-Addiction Program

The plan involves two aspects of our physiology: brain chemistry and blood sugar balance. Deficiency in certain neurotransmitters, especially serotonin, often leads to sugar craving. Fluctuation in blood sugar leads to cravings and energy crashes.

The very first step to recovery from sugar addiction is a gradual change of diet. Begin your personal program by conscious reduction of sweets and desserts you consume. Sweets and desserts are the obvious, identifiable sugar sources. This would mean that you have to remove sugar and sweet foods from your pantry and change your shopping habits. Stay clear of cookies, candy, cakes and ice cream, and less sugar to your coffee and tea. Going a cold turkey does not work for everybody so you may need to replace your desserts with sweet fruit that at least has vitamins and minerals, and has a form of sugar that can be digested by the body. Try to replace fast food with high quality protein and add fresh vegetable to your menu. At the same time you should supplement your diet with high quality multivitamin and mineral formula. Vitamins and minerals will help you nourish your body and may help reduce cravings. In addition you should take a high quality Omega-3 fatty acids and probiotics to restore flora in the intestines.

Removal of sugar from the diet may cause mood swings, low energy, or headaches. To balance the brain chemistry supplement with L-Tryptophan and 5-HTP. These two supplements will help the brain to produce the mood enhancing serotonin. To support blood sugar balance take a chromium supplement. Also, add sugar-balancing cinnamon to your diet.

To control sugar cravings supplement with the amino acid L-glutamine. The suggested dose is 500mg 3-4 times a day, best taken on empty stomach about 30 minutes before a meal or when you feel your blood sugar is very low and you feel like having something sweet. The sugar craving vanishes within minutes and you do not even feel jittery or stressed.

Many nutritionist suggest that we should consume foods that have low glycemic load, or the GL. The GL tells us how a particular food will affect the blood sugar balance. Foods with high GL will cause sugar spikes and cravings. Foods with low GL convert slowly into glucose and encourage body to burn fat. A low glycemic diet will keep you nourished and satiated and will not only help you break your sugar addiction, but also lose weight.

Depending on your current situation you may need to consult a certified health practitioner who will help you break the sugar addiction. A certified nutritionist will help you create a healthy nutrition plan. He or she will also help you clear candida that may also be the cause of your sugar cravings.

If your craving for sugar is mostly emotional you will need to address the underlying emotional issues. Yoga, relaxation and meditation in combination with supplemental magnesium, L-tryptophan and 5-HTP may help a lot, but you may have to see a therapist to understand why your emotional problems are causing addiction. And if you reward yourself with a large piece of cake, you should probably change your strategy. Try a large bowl of fresh strawberries the next time you feel that you need a reward.
P.S. Many people who wish to break the sugar addiction resort to artificial sweeteners to satisfy their love and craving for the sweet taste. The only artificial sweetener that I would take is stevia. Stevia is made from the leaves of South American plant Stevia rebaudiana. Studies demonstrated that stevia may actually lower blood sugar levels and improve the function of insulin.

Blueberries are one of the healthiest foods available to us all year round. More and more researchers publish study results that are quite amazing. Short of a nutritional miracle this tiny dark berries can help reverse effects of premature aging and improve debilitating conditions.

Blueberry is a native North American perennial flowering plant from the genus Vaccinium that also includes cranberries, lingonberries and bilberries. The plant produces indigo-colored berries and is mostly cultivated in North America and Europe, but also grows successfully in other parts of the world.

Blueberries are very high in vitamin K, vitamin C, manganese, copper and dietary fiber. They contain anthocyanins, flavonols, and other phytonutrients that include resveratrol and pterostilbene. Studies demonstrated that all these phytonutirents act as antioxidants that protect the whole body from oxidative stress. These nutrients protect the DNA and act as anti-inflammatory agents that help reduce inflammation in the body.

Cognitive Health

The latest research suggests that compounds in blueberries may help slow down age-related damage to the brain cells, reverse age-related memory loss and improve overall cognitive health. Test subjects who consumed blueberries had improved memory, learning skills, cognition, reasoning, verbal comprehension and numerical skills.

Blueberries may help slow down cognitive decline in aging adults and prevent against Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease. Researchers discovered that compounds in blueberries significantly increase production of the neurotransmitter dopamine. Dopamine deficiency is associated with bad mood, depression and Parkinson's disease. Increased consumption of blueberries may help ward off the onset of Parkinson's disease, improve mood and alleviate depression in dopamine deficient individuals.

Cardiovascular Health

Blueberries protect blood vessels from oxidative stress and help balance cholesterol. People who ate 1-2 cups of blueberries daily for a period of 1-3 months had increased levels of HDL (the good cholesterol) and reduced levels of LDL or the blood vessels clogging and damaging bad cholesterol. Blueberry extract was shown to lower blood pressure. People who eat blueberries on regular basis have much lower chance of developing hypertension. Research shows that blueberries help lower blood pressure in two ways: On the one hand they help blood vessels to relax reducing the resistance to blood flow; on the other, blueberries (the extract, to be precise) inhibits the protein that the body uses to keep blood pressure elevated.

Blood Sugar

Blueberries are classified as low-GI fruits. GI or the Glycemic Index is a method of measuring the impact of food on our blood glucose levels. Foods with lower GI release glucose more slowly and steadily and do not cause glucose spikes. This is important for people who struggle with metabolic syndrome, insulin resistance, type 2 diabetes and obesity. In addition, fiber in blueberries helps to further balance blood sugar and improve health of those patients who were diagnosed with blood sugar problems.

Cancer

Various studies demonstrated that blueberry extract may prevent uncontrolled cell reproduction that could lead to formation of tumors. The extract also prevented formation of pre-cancerous lesions. Cancers such as that of the colon or the cervix begin as pre-cancerous lesions and turn into malignant tumors. Blueberry extract greatly reduced formation of such abnormal tissues.

Blueberry extract also prevented angiogenesis or the formation of new blood vessels that feed the tumors. Cancer has the ability to spread to adjacent or distant organs. Tumor cells can penetrate the blood (and lymphatic) vessels and spread throughout the body. For the metastatic spread of cancer a network of blood (and lymphatic) vessels is important. The formation of new blood vessels is called angiogenesis. (The formation of new lymph vessels is called lymphangiogenesis.) Blueberry extract curtails this growth of blood vessels and increases survival rate in cancer patients. It also has the ability to inhibit enzyme responsible for the proliferation of cancer cells. And last but not least, the extract triggers apoptosis or cancer cells' death.

Vision

Antioxidants in blueberries help protect the retina from oxidative damage. They also protect the retina from damage caused by the sun. Anthocyanosides in blueberries provide protection against such disorders as the age-related macular degeneration, myopia, cataracts, glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, extreme dryness and retinal infections. People who consume blueberries on regular basis report improved night vision.

Urinary Tract

Just like cranberries, blueberries contain compounds that prevent E. coli bacteria from adhering to the walls of the bladder. According to latest research this helps ward off the urinary tract infections.

Weight Management

As I mentioned before, blueberries have a very low glycemic index and help balance blood sugar. This helps people with weight problems to reduce cravings. Blueberries help lower triglycerides and cholesterol
levels, and improve fasting glucose and insulin sensitivity. Moreover, polyphenols and catechins found in blueberries help activate fat-burning
genes in abdominal fat cells. And last but not least, fiber in blueberries helps improve digestion and elimination. All these factors combined with active lifestyle, exercise and sensible calorie intake may contribute to a desired weight loss.

Conclusion

There is hardly any system in the body that is not positively affected by the consumption of blueberries. Adding one or two cups of blueberries to your daily diet can help your reverse premature aging and protect you from many diseases.

Blueberries are rather inexpensive and are easily accessible throughout the year. When buying fresh blueberries make sure that you are buying pesticide-free organically grown berries. They are darker and richer in antioxidants. Fresh and frozen blueberries can be used to make smoothies or desserts. Dried blueberries can be added to cereals or trail mixes.

Standardized blueberry extract sold in capsules has one advantage over the fresh fruit. It provides the most reliable means of delivering the vital flavonoid components to your body. Capsules can be taken as a means of prevention in addition to regular consumption of fresh fruit.

Estrogen dominance is the main culprit in many
conditions which lead to infertility and worse – estrogen dependent
cancers. Some examples of estrogen dominant conditions are PCOS
(Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome), ovarian cysts, endometriosis, fibroids,
polyps, low sperm count, poor sperm quality as a result of low
testosterone, fibrocystic breast disease and obesity.

There are three different types of estrogen produced by the
ovaries; E1 (estrone), E2 (estradiol) and E3 (estriol). Estrogen is a
very important hormone for women. It promotes maturation of follicles,
development of endometrium for implantation of the fertilized egg,
production of fertile mucus, softens the cervix, lubricates vagina
during intercourse and helps sperm to swim in the female reproductive
system. It is the key hormone for development of female sexual organs
and it’s important for overall health of your breasts, fallopian tubes,
ovaries and the vagina. And when you reach your menopausal years, your
can thank estrogen deficiency for hot-flushes, dry vagina and the risk
of osteoporosis.

Too much of the good thing?

So how come that something that’s so good and important for female
health can be also causing a host of conditions which predispose to
infertility and cancer?

Balance and moderation is the key to any successful endeavor. Too much
exercise can actually break down your muscle tissue and cause you to
gain weight. Too much vitamin C can give you diarrhea and too much
estrogen can cause a hormonal imbalance.

The fourth type of estrogen we recognize belongs to the group of so
called xeno-estrogens. Xeno in Greek means ‘foreign’ i.e. not made by
the body. In this context it refers to estrogens which we get exposed
to through the food we eat, drinks we drink, creams, lotions and
potions we put on our skin and the chemicals we inhale – some from the
environment and some from exposure to commercial perfumes and cleaning
solutions. Xeno-estrogens look similar to body-made estrogen and can
dock on your estrogen receptors (key-lock system) and activate the same
reaction in cell a real estrogen would. As all hormones depend on each
other and secretion of one prompts the secretion of other hormones,
soon you end up with uncoordinated release of hormones which start
creating havoc in the body.

Daily agitation over prolonged time can
lead to tissue and function changes ultimately resulting in a chronic
condition. Chronic conditions respond best to dietary and lifestyle
changes. So what can you do to prevent estrogen dominance in your body?

5 foods to reduce estrogen dominance

Meet the cruciferous vegetable family! They are broccoli, cabbage,
kale, brussels sprouts and cauliflower. This family of vegetables
contains sulfur compounds (can be gas forming) and indole-3-carbinol.
These guys bind to estrogen and escort it out of the body. Have three
servings a day. These veggies can be eaten raw in salads (broccoli,
cabbage, cauliflower and kale) or steamed (brussels sprouts). Kale makes
wonderful healthy chips baked in the oven with some olive oil and sea
salt.

Hello green leafy vegetables! Spinach, celery, rucola, parsley,
dandelions, Swiss chard. Have 2-3 servings a day. Gren leafy’s make
great salads and can be blended in smoothies. Adding one banana to your
smoothie will mask the grassy taste. If drinking a green drink is not
your thing, add a handful of frozen blueberries or cherries to make it
purple and taste of berries. A dash of stevia and vanilla essence
compliment this gourmet combination.

Good morning sunshine! Fruits which remind us of our beautiful sun are
all the citrus fruits; lemons, oranges, grapefruits (ruby red and
yellow), mandarines, tangerines, pomelos and limes. Citrus fruits
contain d-limonene which helps detoxify estrogen. Aim for one serving a
day. You can juice them, eat them and add their juice to a variety of
dishes. Organic lemons and oranges can be blended whole and make a great
addition to smoothies making them taste delightful. If you are going
to use the peel (which is very healthy) make sure to wash the fruit and
use only organic fruits as pesticides can get absorbed into the
essential oils found in the peel of citrus fruits. Pesticides act as
xeno-estrogens, so you want to avoid getting exposed to them.

Grandma knows best! Apple a day, keeps the doctor away. Insoluble
fibre found in apples, oats, berries and beans binds to estrogen in your
small intestines and stops it from being absorbed. That way you can
reduce your exposure to xeno-estrogens from your diet. Aim for two
servings a day.About the author

Lastly these small seeds contain more than meets the eye! Sesame
seeds and flax seeds contain estrogen binging lignans. Aim for two to
three tablespoons a day. You can have flaxseed oil or ground up
flaxseeds, sesame seeds sprinkled in salad or ground up in a paste
called tahini. Flaxseeds are also rich in omega 3 fatty acids.

These foods should be part of your daily staple diet. They are very
versatile and can accompany many dishes as sides or feature as a main
dish. Get creative and ensure to have them daily.

Share your
thoughts on these foods and if you have a delicious recipe featuring
these estrogen dominance eliminators we’d love to try it out!

Manda Koso, also known as Man Koso, Dr. Xeniji, or M-K Europa, is a
highly concentrated enzymatic supplement from Japan where it is
considered to be "functional food". It is a sweet fermented brown paste
made of more than 50 natural ingredients such as fruits, vegetables,
sea vegetables, grains, honey, and herbs, that were exposed to a slow,
elaborate fermentation process for 3-5 years. No water or chemical
catalysts are used to speed the fermentation process. Fermentation
occurs spontaneously at low temperatures and is based on the natural
activity of lactobacillus, brown muscovado sugar from Okinawa, and
brewer's yeast.

The original Manda Koso was developed by Dr.
Shingoro Matsuura who initially created it for pregnant women to
nourish and support the growth and development of the fetus. Dr.
Matsuura wished to utilize the energy and the nutrients of the plants
for the benefits of humans. He wished to restore vitality and enhance
health in elderly and healthy grow in the young.

Dr.
Matsuura holds a degree in breeding and fermentation from the Tokyo
University of Agriculture and is a pioneer in his domain. He devoted
more than 30 years of his life to the research of the biochemical
mechanisms underlying fermentation processes and the development of a
perfect broad spectrum catalyst. He established his fermentation plant
in Innoshima, Hiroshima Prefecture in Japan. The facility produces
about 70,000 145 gram jars of the product a month. A 145 gram jar is
considered to last for four to six weeks.

Fermentation
is a process known to humans for more than 10,000 years, in which the
original substance undergoes biochemical changes under the influence of
yeasts or other microorganisms without the presence of oxygen. The
fermentation process enhances the enzymatic activity and makes many
substance bio-available to the human body. Fermented foods are part of
the Japanese culture since ancient times. This process was refined and
perfected over the ages. Using ancient knowledge and his modern
innovations, Dr. Matsuura devised a 4-stage production process which
mimics the processes of digestion and fermentation in the human body.
The longer the process the more valuable and bio-available the product.
The enzymatically processed plant matter contains nutrients that are
easily absorbed by the cells of the body.

Manda Koso comes in three grades:

Manda Koso that was fermented for 39 months

Manda Hi Koso that was fermented for more than 48 months

Manda Koso Gold that was fermented for more than 60 months

Manda Slim supports healthy weight loss and digestion

Manda
Koso contains substantial amounts of Vitamin K, Iodine, and Potassium.
Because of its high amino acid and enzyme content Manda Koso is very
beneficial to health and overall well being. It has a very strong
antioxidant activity and helps the body to balance the pH naturally. It
supplies the body with energy and helps to activate the immune system.
It is often used by cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy as it has
the capacity to detoxify the body. Manda Koso Gold is used in
alternative cancer therapies all over the world. Dr. Matsuura makes no
claims that his product cures cancer. What it most certainly does is
the activation of body's own disease fighting mechanisms. An ongoing
research shows that Manda Koso has the ability to shrink the breast
cancer tumors in vitro. It decreases the beta-galactosidase activity
and enhances apoptosis of the cancer cells. It also has the exceptional
capacity to boost the activity of the NK cells that engage in battle
against cancerous cells in the body.

Manda Koso is safe and
nutritious, but rather expensive, although the price is justified by
the elaborate production process and the quality of ingredients used.
In Japan it is also used in husbandry to improve the healthy growth of
plants and animals.

Countless volumes were written about the Chinese medical theory and
the history of Traditional Chinese Medicine. Ongoing research in China
and in the West is testing the efficacy of traditional treatments and
the herbs used by the Chinese for many thousands of years. Chinese
medicine finds new applications in the treatment of terminal cancer
patients. Many chronic disorders that are hopelessly incurable in the
West seem to improve considerably with the Chinese approach to disease.
This article presents an introduction to a highly developed and complex
medical system.

"When the mind is calm and stable, the vitality of life circulates
harmoniously throughout the body. If the body is nourished and
protected by this circulation of vitality, how can it possibly become
ill?" From Huangdi Neijing also known as the Yellow Emperor's Classic of Internal Medicine

Chinese Traditional Medicine is one of the oldest systematized
medical systems in the world. Its recorded history dates back to about
1,000 BC, but its concepts are much older and deeply rooted in the
Chinese culture and the Taoist philosophical thought which originated
in China more than 5,000 years ago. It is almost impossible to
understand the concepts of Chinese medicine without a rudimentary
understanding of the philosophy and cosmology of traditional China
where immortality was considered to be the highest purpose of life. The
Chinese medical ethics developed around this goal and physicians strove
to preserve life and prevent disease. They received payment for as long
as the patient remained healthy.

Human Body and the Traditional Chinese Medicine

Traditional
Chinese Medicine regards human body holistically as a part of a greater
whole. This attitude is based on Taoist philosophy and its
understanding of the universe. Just as much as an individual has an
effect on his or her environment, the environment in which he or she is
immersed, has an influence on the individual. Everything we do has a
consequence and manifests itself in the flow of energy. Our actions
disturb the harmony in nature within and without. We must strive to
restore balance and maintain the equilibrium. Symptoms of disease are
seen in the context greater than the patient's body and are understood
as a disturbance in the flow of energy. To heal means to restore the
balance and harmony.

The anatomical classification of a human
body differs form the classification known to the Western medicine and
there is no dichotomy between the body and the mind, and both, physical
and mental illness, is regarded as a manifestation of an obstructed
energy flow within the body and between the human body and the
environment.

Key Concepts of Traditional Chinese Medicine

Qi
(chi) is one of the most important philosophical concepts in Taoism. Qi
literally means air, gas, or breath and is often translated as energy
or energy flow. Although not really identical, this concept is often
compared to the Greek pneuma or the Indian prana for a better
understanding. Qi is the life force that permeates everything that
exists in the universe. Obstructions in the flow of qi result in
disease and illness. To restore health means to open energy blockages
and restore the qi flow in the body.

Jing Luo* or
meridians are the channels through which the qi energy circulates in
the body. Disease occurs when the flow of energy in the meridians is
obstructed. Complex techniques were developed to open blockages and
restore the flow of energy.

San Bao or three treasures are considered to be the three elements sustaining human life. They are the Jing or essence, Qi or energy, and Shen
or spirit, soul, or mind. Longevity depends on the properly nurtured
body where everything is in balance and the essence jing is abundant.
Depleted jing means premature aging, disease, and premature death.

Jin Ye
or body fluids are generated mostly in the digestive system from the
nutrition that enters the body. In the body the fluids undergo multiple
transformations until pure fluids are separated from the impure or
turbid ones. The pure fluids are transported upwards to the lungs and
excreted through the breath. The turbid fluids are transported
downwards and excreted through the bladder. Multiple body organs are
involved in the transformation of the fluids.

Xue or
blood is understood as a dense form of body fluids that are under the
energizing influence of the qi. Xue does not only flow in the
anatomical blood vessels, but also in the meridians because of its
relationship with the qi energy. The Chinese developed a very complex
theory of blood and its importance to health. Blood provides moisture
and nourishment to the organs, bones, tendons, muscles, and the skin.
Energized with qi, blood is the foundation for mental activity.

Yin Yang
represents another ancient concept in Chinese philosophy. Yin and yang
are complementary, interdependent aspects of a greater whole. They do
not represent duality or dichotomy, although in the West they are often
understood as such, but are rather understood as polarities in the
non-dualistic Chinese thought. They arise together and the harmony in
the universe depends on the balanced flow or interplay between the two
forces. In Chinese medicine, health is understood as a perfect balance
between the two forces. Because these forces fluctuate constantly, even
a healthy body undergoes changes under the influence of the external
and the internal environment. Shift in balance is natural. When it
becomes pathological it manifests itself as a disease. TCM doctor has
to determine the reason for imbalance and bring it back.

Wu Xing
or the Five Phases also known as the Five Elements, is another concept
central in the Chinese thought and was devised to explain the changes
in the universe. In the Chinese medicine wu xing correspond with the
organs of the body and represent natural cycles and patterns of change
where one element affects another causing change in another one. The
five elements are: earth, fire, metal, water, wood.

Zang Fu*
theory divides the body into five zang organs and six fu organs. The
zang and fu organs do not exactly represent the anatomical organs in
the body, but are rather generalizations of physiology and pathology of
associated systems in the human body. The zang organs are responsible
for the production and storage of essence: qi, blood, body fluids. The
fu organs receive and digest nutrition, absorb nutrients, and eliminate
waste. Health is understood as the perfect function and harmonious
interplay between the organs. To restore health means to calm
overactive systems or to energize those that are failing to function
properly.

Diagnosis and Treatment of Disease

Like
in the Western medicine, the Chinese doctors examine their patients,
make a diagnosis, prescribe medication and treatment. The anamnesis (or
gathering of the case history) involves:

pulse diagnosis

tongue diagnosis

diagnosis of the feces and urine

examination of physiognomy

A
doctor of Traditional Chinese Medicine uses his senses to assess a
patient's health. Everything that can be observed is useful for a
diagnosis of disorder: skin color and texture, body odor, sound of the
voice, breathing, etc. After the diagnosis is made, an adequate
medication and treatment will be prescribed to restore the energetic
balance within the patients body and with the environment. Medication
in TCM is based on the more than 5,000 years old documented tradition.
Chinese Materia Medica includes plants, minerals, and body parts of
particular animals. A special diet will be suggested as certain foods
may be detrimental to the condition of a patient, while others restore
the balance and enhance the energy flow in the body.

Practitioner
of TCM seeks to cure the symptoms of a disease and to eradicate the
cause of it. Herbal medication may be sufficient in some cases, however
to restore health, a particular treatment or a combination of
treatments will prescribed by the doctor. Treatment may include:

Acupuncture
is a method of treatment unique to Chinese medicine. It was developed
and perfected over thousands of years. Because disease is understood as
an obstruction in the flow of qi along the meridians, acupuncture is
used to restore the flow and create a balance within the body. To
achieve this acupuncturist manipulates the energy flow with the help of
thin needles that are inserted into the acupuncture points along the
meridians of affected organ system. There are twelve main meridians and
400 acupuncture points that are recognized by the World Health
Organization. Depending on the patients condition multiple acupuncture
sessions may be necessary to remove the energy blockage.

Moxibustion
is a treatment in which mugwort herb or moxa is used to warm the area
in the vicinity or directly on the acupuncture point in order to
stimulate circulation. Depending on the diagnosis, moxibustion is used
together with acupuncture to especially treat chronic health problems
and health problems associated with aging.

Cupping is a
therapy in which heated glass cups are applied to the skin in the area
where the energy is congested and does not flow properly. The cups
create suction and draw the blood into the area. This treatment leaves
the patient with dark bruises on the area of application, but is very
effective for treating cold and flu as well as muscle injuries and
headaches. Bruising depends on the severity of injury or congestion and
disappears after a few days after the treatment has been completed.

Tui
na is a Chinese body work developed to restore the balance in the body.
The therapist uses a wide range of massage techniques to manipulate the
energy flow in the meridians. Tui na is often used in conjunction with
acupuncture.

Qi gong is therapy that combines breathing,
movement, and meditation. It helps to restore and regulate the flow of
qi in the body and to promote overall mental and physical health. The
exercises were devised to promote longevity.

Five
elements nutrition is a diet based on the qualities of certain foods
according to the Five elements theory. Depending on his condition, a
patient is advised to follow a particular diet and to avoid foods that
are detrimental to his condition. Emphasis is put on balance and
energetic tendencies of certain foods and their interaction with the
body systems.

Herbal medicine uses thousands of herbs,
minerals, and body parts of certain animals. After a diagnosis is made,
Chinese practitioner prescribes the most efficient herb or a formula.
Over the millennia, countless standardized formulas were developed to
treat diseases and conditions. They are all based on the same energetic
principles that underlay Chinese medical theory and are meant to
restore balance in the body of the patient. Herbs may be added to food
and eaten with stews or soups. They can be drank as teas, used in
poultices, as tinctures, or as pills.

Chinese medical
system was successfully used for thousands of years in China and other
Asian countries where the Chinese established their colonies. It was
brought to the West with the influx of Chinese immigrants. Its efficacy
is legendary and its popularity is growing. As a holistic system, TCM
is not only interested in alleviating the symptoms, but most
importantly, it addresses the causes of the disease and seeks to
restore balance and modify behaviors that disturb the inner and outer
flow of energy. All aspects of existence are being addressed to align
the body, mind, and spirit.

everybody's mouth now, but this fame did not come overnight. There is a
16th century written record that chia, or Salvia Hispanica, was
cultivated by Aztecs in the pre-Columbian era. It has been suggested by
the historians that chia were as important a crop for the Aztecs as was
the corn.
Black Chia Seeds

<span style="font-family: "georgia", "times new roman", serif;">To this day the plant is cultivated in Mexico and Guatemala where it is an important source of nutrition.

<span style="font-family: "georgia", "times new roman", serif;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia", "times new roman", serif;">Botanically, chia is a member of the mint family. The seeds are either
black or white and are easily digested. They do not have to be ground in order to be consumed.

<span style="font-family: "georgia", "times new roman", serif;">The tiny seeds of the plant Salvia
hispanica are one of the most nutritious superfoods known to us. They
are an excellent source of

<span style="font-family: "georgia", "times new roman", serif;">complete protein

<span style="font-family: "georgia", "times new roman", serif;">soluble and insoluble fiber

<span style="font-family: "georgia", "times new roman", serif;">antioxidants

<span style="font-family: "georgia", "times new roman", serif;">Omega-3 fatty acids

<span style="font-family: "georgia", "times new roman", serif;">vitamins A, C, E, niacin, thiamine, riboflavin, folate, and B12

<span style="font-family: "georgia", "times new roman", serif;">minerals such as calcium, magnesium, manganese, boron, strontium, phosphorus, potassium, iron and zinc

<span style="font-family: "georgia", "times new roman", serif;">Because of their nutrient content chia seeds have many important health benefits:

<span style="font-family: "georgia", "times new roman", serif;">Chia seeds support digestion, detoxification and elimination. They
are high in fiber and have the ability to swell up in the intestine.
They soothe and lubricate the colon and help strengthen peristaltic
action thus improving elimination. Mucin in chia also helps reduce inflammation of the digestive tract.

<span style="font-family: "georgia", "times new roman", serif;">Chia seeds are great for weight loss and weight maintenance. Improved digestion and elimination are important for anyone who is
trying to lose weight. But chia are also rich in essential fatty acids
that directly contribute to weight loss as they boost metabolism and
help build lean muscles. They are nutrient dense but, at the same time, very law in
calories. Chia seeds can also give a prolonged feeling of satiation as they can absorb water nine times their own weight. Simply soak chia seeds in water for 15-20 minutes and drink the mixture between the meals.

<span style="font-family: "georgia", "times new roman", serif;">Thanks to their law glycemic index chia seeds help stabilize blood glucose. Research shows that chia
has the capacity to slow dawn the rate at which complex carbohydrates
are digested and assimilated into the body. The soluble fiber in chia
helps stabilize blood sugar levels and prevent glucose spikes.

<span style="font-family: "georgia", "times new roman", serif;">Chia seeds can improve cardiovascular health. They help reduce high
blood pressure and have slightly blood thinning properties thus
preventing dangerous blood clots. They can lower harmful LDL cholesterol and reduce triglycerides in the blood. At the same time they help increase the levels of good HDL cholesterol.

<span style="font-family: "georgia", "times new roman", serif;">Chia seeds have strong anti-inflammatory properties. They bring relief to people suffering from inflammation as the highly concentrated Omega-3 fatty acids convert into inflammation-fighting and pain-relieving prostaglandins. Moreover, Omega-3 fatty acids provide lubrication to painful joints. Studies demonstrated that people who consumed ca. 40 grams of chia seeds daily had significantly lower levels of the C-reactive protein - a blood protein that indicates chronic inflammation in the body.

<span style="font-family: "georgia", "times new roman", serif;">The essential fatty acids in chia seeds help improve brain health and cognition. They make the cell membranes more flexible which allows better saturation with nutrients and better transmission of impulses between the cells.

<span style="font-family: "georgia", "times new roman", serif;">Chia seeds are an amazing source of energy. <span style="font-family: "georgia", "times new roman", serif;">Already the ancient Aztec warriors used chia seeds to build up strength help, sustain energy and
maintain hydration for long distance journeys on foot. Now athletes use chia to optimize physical performance, regulate hydration
and maintain energy levels during intense workouts.

<span style="font-family: "georgia", "times new roman", serif;">Chia seeds, especially the dark variety, are very rich in antioxidants. They contain high levels of chlorogenic acid, caffeic acid, quercetin, myricetin, kaempferol, and vitamins C and E. All these compounds are strong free radical scavengers and act both, individually and synergistically, to prevent oxidation.

<span style="font-family: "georgia", "times new roman", serif;">As you can see, the tiny chia seeds are quite amazing. Anyone who wishes to delay aging and improve his health should eat chia <span style="font-family: "georgia", "times new roman", serif;">on daily basis. They are gluten free and therefore perfectly suited for people with sensitivity or allergy to gluten.

<span style="font-family: "georgia", "times new roman", serif;">Chia seeds store very well. High levels of vitamin C and E and the cinnamic acid in chia seeds prevent the seeds from turning rancid.

<span style="font-family: "georgia", "times new roman", serif;"> The seeds have a slightly nutty flavor. They can be sprinkled on salads, added to a morning cereal, yogurt, puddings and smoothies, or used in baking recipes. They are easily digested and do not have to be ground, but you can grind them to a fine meal if you want to.

<span style="font-family: "georgia", "times new roman", serif;">When buying chia seeds make sure you are buying a superior, organic product.

Graviola (Annona muricata)

I would like to start the New Year with an article that may open your eyes to natural cures as a real alternative to conventional medicine.

About six months ago my Spanish neighbor Miranda told me that she was diagnosed with cancer. Her kidneys were infested with tumors and she had six to nine months to live if she underwent the classical anti-cancer therapy that included chemotherapy, surgery and radiation. Her younger brother had the same disease and did not make it.

Miranda is a diminutive, good-natured lady in her mid-fifties. The diagnosis did not change much of her outlook on life. A Spanish Catholic she decided to put her life into God's hands and was playing with the idea of dying without allowing the horrible chemotherapy to destroy her.

Miranda is a lucky lady. She has at least three natural health "obsessed" neighbors: a therapeutic masseur, and at least two herbal medicine aficionados, one of those using graviola on regular bases as an "insurance" against cancer.

I see Miranda from time to time, but do not have the courage to ask about her disease. She still has her wonderfully thick hair and does not look incredibly sick. In fact, it seems to me that she is somewhat improving. And always smiling!

Another neighbor told me that Miranda decided to change her lifestyle. She decided to detoxify her body and change her nutrition just a bit to begin with. She also works with the masseur next door. She undergoes a massage therapy to calm her nerves and reduce the stress. And, after the herbs-loving neighbor made a suggestion, she is now on graviola for almost five months. The best thing is, her tumors disappeared completely and she is in no need of any conventional anti-cancer treatment!

Each cancer case is individual, each immune system reacts differently to stimulation, but Miranda is the first person I have ever met who recovered from cancer with natural means.

Graviola fruit also known as soursop or guanabana

For years I kept graviola and few other nature wonders in the back of my mind for the horrible eventuality. If I were ever to be diagnosed with cancer this would be what I would opt for. Knowledge may save your life, I told myself years ago. It can save the lives of others if you share it with them. This is what the other neighbor did and saved Miranda a lot of pain.

I checked the Internet and found that graviola is surrounded by controversy and I advise caution when you decide to use it a s a cure. But one thing must be said, graviola was used by native people of South America to cure many ailments and can be still used to improve one's immune response. Like with any product on the market you must consider the purity of the product and the real content of the herb before you buy a supplement.

~ Health Benefits of Graviola ~

Graviola (Annona muricata), also known as soursop, is an evergreen plant native to Central and South America. It grows in Mexico, Cuba, the Caribbean, Colombia, Brazil, and Venezuela, among others. Graviola is also cultivated in parts of Africa and in Southeast Asia.

Graviola plant produces fruits with edible white pulp and indigestible black seeds. The fruit pulp is used to make smoothies, juices and desserts.

The fruit is rich in Vitamin C; B vitamins including B1, B2, B3, B5, B6 and folate; minerals including calcium, magnesium, potassium, phosphorus, iron, and zinc; and choline.

A cup of freshly made graviola (soursop) juice in Singapore

Indigenous natural medicine uses all parts of the graviola plant: fruit, bark, leaves, roots, and seeds, and attributes different healing properties to each.

The fruit, for instance, is used to rid the body of the intestinal parasites and worms. It is also used to bring dawn the fever, increase mother's milk after childbirth, cure diarrhea and dysentery. The bark, leaves and roots are used as infusion that is considered to be anti-spasmodic, hypotensive and sedative. Crushed seeds of the fruit are used against internal and external parasites, including worms and head lice. A tea made of leaves is used to control diabetes, strengthen the liver, and calm the inflammation of the mucosa.

Graviola contains many active compounds that have been studied by scientists since the 1940s. Of great interest to scientists is the group of chemicals called Annonaceous acetogenins. Graviola produces these compounds in its leaves, stem, barks and seeds. Three independently conducted studies demonstrated that these compounds have significant anti-tumor properties and selective toxicity against various cancer cells without harming the healthy cells in the body. Many of these acetogenins were selectively toxic to cancer cells at a very law doses. Studies published in 1998 describe active compounds in graviola as having strong anti-tumor, anti-cancer, anti-viral and anti-parasitic properties.

While ongoing studies produce even more promising results, there are some who dismiss graviola claiming that there is no successful research proving graviola's efficacy against cancer. Moreover, inferior graviola products are being sold all over the Internet and spectacular claims are being made without much justification by people who take advantage of those who suffer from cancer.

Like any herb, graviola does not come without side effects and contra-indications. Graviola should not be taken by pregnant women, people with law blood pressure. Since graviola is a potent anti-microbial agent, it can kill off the friendly bacteria in the gut. Supplementation with probiotics may be necessary with prolonged use of graviola products.

No interaction with pharmaceutical drugs has been reported so far, but since graviola is a cardio-depressant and vasodilator, it may potentiate anti-hypertensive and cardiac depressant drugs.

Supplementation with CoQ10 during the graviola therapy may render graviola supplements less effective. CoQ10 increases levels of ATP. Graviola, on the other hand, blocks transfer of ATP to cancer cells. ATP (adenosine triphosphate) is a primary source of intracellular energy. In order to survive, reproduce and grow, a cancer cell needs large amounts of energy. When acetogenins in graviola block the energy flow to a cancer cell, it can no longer grow and is destined to die.

Some alkaloids extracted from the seeds and roots of graviola are neurotoxic and may cause neuronal dysfunction and degeneration leading to symptoms of Parkinson's disease. Their use is not recommended.

Many cancer patients and health practitioners using extracts from leaves and stem of graviola as a complimentary therapy in their cancer protocols. The suggested therapeutic use is 2000-3000 mg to be taken three times a day.

Contact certified health care provider, certified herbalist or certified
nutritionist before you choose self medication with graviola supplements.

A few months ago a colleague of mine told me that her grandmother makes her own garlic potion to stay healthy. She marinates garlic in alcohol for up to six weeks and when the potion is ready, she drinks few drops a day for few weeks. She repeats this cure every year and never gets sick.

Organic garlic

I wondered if anyone else knew about the garlic cure and started an online search. To my surprise the search produced "Tibetan garlic cure." The post showed up on several blogs and some bloggers claimed that this ancient garlic recipe was discovered in Tibet in 1970s by an UNESCO commission.

Unfortunately I do not have any better information and cannot verify this claim, but I know that the therapeutic properties of garlic were known in many cultures for centuries, and that many cultures use alcohol to prepare herbal liquors, tinctures and medicinal wines. The Chinese used therapeutic liquors for centuries; so did Hildegard von Bingen in Medieval Europe. Herbs, flowers, fruits, roots, and even small animals (such as snakes) or animal parts were preserved in alcohol. Alcohol potentiated the healing properties of used ingredients and allowed better preservation from spoilage. To this day Chinese pharmacies in Hong Kong and everywhere where Traditional Chinese Medicine is practiced, sell therapeutic wines. You can see a coiled snake or a ginseng root that has been preserved to extract the its highest healing potential.

Garlic (Allium sativum) is a plant native to Central Asia. For thousands of years garlic has been used not only in cooking, but also as medicine. The Sumerians, Egyptians, Chinese, Tibetans, Indians, Ancient Greeks and Romans, all valued garlic's therapeutic qualities. They discovered garlic's potential to kill germs and used it as medicine to cure various infections, including typhus, dysentery, influenza, and cholera.

Modern research confirms what the ancients knew for ages. Garlic not only kills germs, it is also an effective herb that can be used modulate and strengthen the immune system. Scientists also found that garlic can also prevent cardiovascular disease and reduce blood pressure.

Miron glass jar

Garlic seems to be a very healthy herb all by itself. Is it possible that preserving it in alcohol enhances its healing potential even more?

To make the garlic solution you will need about 12 ounces (350 g) garlic, 3 ounces of 96% pure, food grade alcohol, and a tight closing jar.

I decided to use a violet Miron glass jar. Miron glass blocks the complete spectrum of visible light with the exception of the violet part. At
the same time it allows a certain part to be permeable for radiation in
the spectral range of UV-A, and infra red light. This unique
combination offers optimal protection against the ageing processes that
are released by visible light, thus lengthening durability and potency
of products. Scientists in Germany found that Miron glass enhances the therapeutic strength of products stored in it.

Making of the Ancient Tibetan Garlic Cure:

Wash and dry the jar. Set aside.

Peal the garlic cloves. You may want to wear rubber gloves.

Roughly chop the garlic cloves and transfer them into your clean jar.

Slowly pour the alcohol into the jar making sure that the garlic is well covered. Add more alcohol if you find it necessary.

Tightly close the lid and place the jar in a cool, dark place. Allow the garlic to marinade for 10 days.

After 10 days carefully open the jar and strain the garlic tincture through a sieve pouring it into a clean measuring jar.

Pour the clear liquid into a clean dark glass bottle and close it with a pipette stopper. (I used Miron glass bottles)

This is how the Tibetan garlic should be made according to various websites. I changed the method a bit remembering that my colleague's grandmother kept her garlic in alcohol for at least three weeks. I allowed the tincture to mature even more when I transferred it into two small Miron glass bottles. I stored the bottles for another three weeks before I began the cure.

Miron glass bottles with garlic tincture

There is a suggested way to administer the garlic cure beginning with one drop at breakfast on the first day and increasing the amount with each meal up to 25 drops on day eleven. Continue taking 25 drops per meal until the tincture is finished. Remember to shake the bottle before each use.

I am not sure that such "schedule" is necessary, although some homeopathic or alchemistic principles might be involved here. I decided to take two drops with each meal, three times a day and I take it in a spoon of yogurt to neutralize the strong garlic odor.

The tincture is said to have incredible healing potential:

it may help decrease blood pressure

it may improve blood circulation

it may help regulate and balance blood lipids

it may prevent the LDL cholesterol buildup in arteries

it may help prevent thrombosis

it may help speed up metabolism and stimulate fat burning in the body

it may help detoxify the kidney and improve the kidney function

it may help improve the function of the immune system

it may help eradicate candida

November is a perfect time to start caring for the immune system. If the cure works I should be infection free till the end of winter.

By Dominique Allmon

*A word of caution: The tincture contains alcohol and is not recommended for children, pregnant women, and people who have alcohol addiction problem.

Like every year women around the world become a bit more aware of this deadly disease
when October comes. Some might have developed the disease over the last twelve months; others may know someone who has.

The statistics are terrifying despite the growing
awareness and health information available to us:

<span style="font-family: "georgia", "times new roman", serif;">
<span style="font-family: "georgia", "times new roman", serif;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia", "times new roman", serif;">About 1 in 8 U.S. women (just under 12%) will develop invasive breast cancer over the course of her lifetime.

<span style="font-family: "georgia", "times new roman", serif;">In
2011, an estimated 230,480 new cases of invasive breast cancer were
expected to be diagnosed in women in the U.S., along with 57,650 new
cases of non-invasive (in situ) breast cancer.

<span style="font-family: "georgia", "times new roman", serif;">About 2,140 new
cases of invasive breast cancer were expected to be diagnosed in men in
2011. A man’s lifetime risk of breast cancer is about 1 in 1,000.

<span style="font-family: "georgia", "times new roman", serif;">From
1999 to 2005, breast cancer incidence rates in the U.S. decreased by
about 2% per year. The decrease was seen only in women aged 50 and
older. One theory is that this decrease was partially due to the reduced
use of hormone replacement therapy (HRT) by women after the results of a
large study called the Women’s Health Initiative were published in
2002. These results suggested a connection between HRT and increased
breast cancer risk.

<span style="font-family: "georgia", "times new roman", serif;">About 39,520 women in the U.S. were expected to die in 2011 from
breast cancer, though death rates have been decreasing since 1990 -
especially in women under 50. These decreases are thought to be the
result of treatment advances, earlier detection through screening, and
increased awareness.

<span style="font-family: "georgia", "times new roman", serif;">For women in the U.S., breast cancer death rates are higher than those for any other cancer, besides lung cancer.

<span style="font-family: "georgia", "times new roman", serif;">Besides
skin cancer, breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer among
American women. Just under 30% of cancers in women are breast cancers.

<span style="font-family: "georgia", "times new roman", serif;">White
women are slightly more likely to develop breast cancer than
African-American women. However, in women under 45, breast cancer is
more common in African-American women than white women. Overall,
African-American women are more llkely to die of breast cancer. Asian,
Hispanic, and Native-American women have a lower risk of developing and
dying from breast cancer.

<span style="font-family: "georgia", "times new roman", serif;">In 2011, there were more than 2.6 million breast cancer survivors in the US.

<span style="font-family: "georgia", "times new roman", serif;">A
woman’s risk of breast cancer approximately doubles if she has a
first-degree relative (mother, sister, daughter) who has been diagnosed
with breast cancer. About 15% of women who get breast cancer have a
family member diagnosed with it.

<span style="font-family: "georgia", "times new roman", serif;">In men, about 1 in 10 breast cancers are believed to be due to BRCA2 mutations, and even fewer cases to BRCA1 mutations.

<span style="font-family: "georgia", "times new roman", serif;">About
85% of breast cancers occur in women who have no family history of
breast cancer. These occur due to genetic mutations that happen as a
result of the aging process and life in general, rather than inherited
mutations.

<span style="font-family: "georgia", "times new roman", serif;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia", "times new roman", serif;"><span style="font-family: "georgia", "times new roman", serif;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia", "times new roman", serif;"><span style="font-family: "georgia", "times new roman", serif;">For
most people the diagnosis comes as a shock. To many it is a death
sentence. And yet, breast cancer, like many other cancers, is a symptom
of a life strategies gone wrong. It can be prevented! Prevention means a
drastic change of lifestyle - a step that relatively few people want to
take. At least not before they are diagnosed with a deadly disease.

<span style="font-family: "georgia", "times new roman", serif;"><span style="font-family: "georgia", "times new roman", serif;">The
importance of early detection of breast cancer cannot be stressed
enough. It takes only a few minutes a day to perform self-exam.

<span style="font-family: "georgia", "times new roman", serif;"><span style="font-family: "georgia", "times new roman", serif;">Healthy
nutrition is vital in prevention of any disease. Just consider that a
better health is only a meal away. It really is this simple!

Like no other fruit, watermelon is considered by many to be a perfect Summer fruit. Thanks to its high water and mineral content, water melon is a tasty thirst quencher. This quality was greatly appreciated as far back in history as Ancient Egypt and Ancient China.

Watermelon (Citrullus lanatus) belongs to the family Cucurbitaceae. It is a vine-like flowering plant that most probably originated in Southern Africa. The plant produces large fruits whose flesh is pink or dark red when ripe. The fruits are covered with thick, green rind. There are more than 1200 varieties cultivated all over the world.

Watermelon is rich in nutrients:

vitamins, especially the vision supporting vitamin A, the immune system modulating vitamin B6 and the immune system boosting vitamin C

minerals, especially magnesium and potassium

amino acid citruline

carotenoids lycopene and beta carotene

flavonoids lutein, zeaxanthin and cryptoxanthin

tripterpenoids

As mentioned before, because of its very high water content, watermelon is a
wonderful thirst quencher. In Traditional Chinese Medicine the
red flesh of the fruit is considered to be cooling and used to purify blood and dispel symptoms of internal and external heat. A very popular watermelon lozenges are prescribed to cure sore throat. To address different symptoms, Chinese doctors use all parts of the fruit, including the rind and the seeds.

Watermelon is a perfect anti-aging superfood. It has few calories, but is very rich in phenolic compounds that include flavonoids, carotenoids, and tripterpenoids. These compounds help fight inflammation and provide protection against free radicals.

The carotenoid lycopene that gives watermelon its red color, is a very effective free-radicals scavenger. In fact, watermelon contains higher levels of lycopene than any other fresh fruit or vegetable - 15 to 20 mg per two-cup serving. The content depends on the ripeness of the fruit.

Lycopene has the ability to inhibit many inflammatory processes in the body including:

the production of pro-inflammatory messaging molecules

the expression of such enzymes as the cyclo-oxygenase and the lipoxygenase that can lead to increased inflammatory response

the activity of molecular signaling agents like nuclear factor kappa B (NFkB)

Another anti-inflammatory compound, the tripterpenoid cucurbitacin E, blocks the activity of cyclo-oxygenase enzymes and neutralizes reactive nitrogen-containing molecules or the RNS.

Watermelon is an amazing source of the amino acid citrulline. The flesh of a watermelon contains about 250 mg of citrulline per cup. Among others, citrulline is converted by the kidneys
and the endothelial cells (cells that line our blood vessels), into amino acid arginine. An enzyme called nitric oxide synthase or NOS, takes the amino acid arginine and uses it to help
produce nitric oxide (NO). NO is a
muscle relaxant that tells the smooth muscles around our blood vessels to relax. When this happens, the space
inside our blood vessels can expand, allowing blood to flow more freely. The relaxation of muscle tension
and increase in blood flow constitutes the mechanism by which NO can improve the erectile
function in men. Although consumption of watermelon significantly increases levels of arginine in the body, the amount of citruline is not enough to cure erectile dysfunction with one portion of watermelon alone.

Citruline also has the ability to flushe the kidneys and
the liver of stored aluminum. Aluminum can be damaging to the cells. It not only
enters our bodies from the environment, but is also a byproduct of protein breakdown within the body.

Latest research also demonstrated that citruline may affect the way fat is deposited in the human body. When citruline converts into arginine, arginine-related molecules called polyarginine peptides are also formed in the body. These compounds are able to block activity of an enzyme
called tissue-nonspecific alkaline phosphatase, or TNAP. When TNAP
activity is shut down, fat cells (adipocytes) create less
fat. The less fat is produced, the less fat is deposited in the body.

Watermelon seeds are also beneficial to health. They contain B Vitamins; incredibly bio-available iron and zinc; magnesium; omega 6 fatty acids; and
the cardiovascular system supporting amino acid arginine. They also contain lysine, tryptophan, and glutamic acid.

The nutrient content makes watermelon one of the healthiest foods available to us. Although a ripe watermelon contains sugar, the fruit has a law glycemic index which means that it will not cause rapid spikes in blood glucose levels. Some animal studies suggest that watermelon juice may even have a positive effect on blood sugar metabolism.

Watermelon is considered a natural diuretic. It helps increase the urine flow, but unlike caffeine it does not put any strain on the kidneys. Moreover, watermelon helps the liver process ammonia.

Watermelon is a good source of amino acids cystein, glutamate and glycine that are necessary for the synthesis of glutathione. Glutathione is the body own antioxidant, detox agent and immune system modulator. Glutathione helps the body effectively excrete mercury, aluminum and pesticides, and improves the efficacy of vitamins C and E in the body.

When fully ripe, watermelon is an alkaline-forming fruit. This fact alone makes watermelon incredibly beneficial to health as diseases such as cancer can only thrive in an acidic environment.
If you made a claim that elderberry, ginger and honey cured flu like symptoms and started advertising and selling your "potion" to afflicted people, you would probably end up in court. But no one gets punished for selling drugs with similar curing power even if such drugs may cause drowsiness, liver damage, kidney failure and what not. At least not right away. Justice is done to patients only after some one's health has been damaged irreversibly by the drug. The liability lawyers find a real gold mine in cases like that and the pharmaceutical industry can afford to pay reparations.

Do not get me wrong. I am not against pharmaceutical industry as such and I am not against allopathic medicine, but I despise a culture of arrogance and cynicism.

I am a healthy individual, but I do not necessarily attribute my health to my genes. There is much more to it. The genes carry an information that may work for you or against you. If there is a history of disease in your family you may be the next in the line to develop it as well. But genetic information is not necessarily a sentence or a curse. Unless you are living with congenital, manifested genetic disorder, your lifestyle is contributing to your overall health and you may never get sick or morbidly obese even if everyone in your family is. If you live a healthy lifestyle, genetic traits remain what they are - potentialities, not death sentences.

Good health is a precious gift and it is a gift you can give to yourself. I advocate active prevention of disease rather than a cure of existing one. Simple changes in lifestyle and nutrition may have very dramatic changes on your overall health. You can lose weight, reverse chronic disease, slow the aging process and prolong your lifespan. But this does not come as a pill. You will have to change established bad habits and invest some money in your nutrition. And most importantly, you will have to consider yourself worthy of such a change. But once you do, you will be amazed. Your body has the potential to heal itself. You just have to give it a chance.

Changes to be made include:

exercise

stress control

detoxification

diet and nutrition

supplementation with high quality nutritional supplements

self-perception and attitude

health education - ignorance may kill you!

The changes may be quite overwhelming and should be made gradually. You may have to consult a certified fitness coach who will help you devise a fitness plan that suits your current needs, but once you gain the knowledge and develop your own intuition you will be able to take care of yourself without any help. Empower yourself. You will not regret it.
